Just subscribing to the thread. Sorry to hear about your bad luck, on the other hand better the front then the rear torsion bar ;o)
My opinion is based on nothing more then a statistical example of 1 on another car, but I would not think the part to be expensive. If you do the labor yourself it woudl work out quite cheap. Good luck. Michel

Wow I bet you will have a drastic change in ride quality. Never heard of one breaking. Piece of cake to change out really. I think good used ones are $150??

Ben, me selling?
Noooooooooo ![]() Vereeken, the broken part is the front aluminum crossmember (which holds both lower control arms). It's not an expensive part really, just a surprise as you can't feel anything odd driving the car. I've had the car well over 100mph and never even knew this problem existed ! Note to self; jack car up tonight (the correct way) and take a close look.

How long have you had the car ? I assume you had a peek under it when you bought it so it must have happened during your ownership ? How can than be - discovered by coincidence ? And you have not noticed anything different ?
Isn´t that just a tad peculiar ?

livi, it's quite obvious that it has been broken for quite some time.
Remeber, there is a metal shield that covers this crossmember and you cannot see where the break is unless you remove the cover. The fuel pump died 2 days ago and we removed the shield to diagnose the fuel pump. You can clearly see how the lower lip is bent back and up nearly 3/4", no doubt from impact with the road or something in the road which has definately not happened during my ownership. Irregardless, why has this thread switched to me having to defend myself to you? I offered this info and pics as a case study for hidden damage that MAY help anyone that looks to purchase a P-car, just to show how something so critical can go unoticed and maybe save another member such grief. Don't be so quick to accuse or condemn. chris57, it was not i that was thinking of selling sir. real550A, don't worry, it's on jackstands until repaired sir. |

Better to find it in the garage than while traveling at 100mph into a hard lefthander. That is a strange place to a break. Good luck, shouldn't be too hard to replace.

PASLANTNOSE I know it was not you who was selling your car. In a previous post a few days ago it was "slantnosesd" who was thinking of selling his car. That is why someone asked if it was you, very similar username. You dont ever have to defend yourself on a forum. Its your car do what you want. I am glad you posted with pictures, just when you think you have seen it all, you learn that there is always something lurking aroung the corner. As our cars get older there will always be something new to pay attention too.

I'm wondering if the PO heard that very loud "CRACK" and decided to sell his 911 to you...
You might want to ask the PO... I'm just glad that it hasn't caused you to wreck. You may want to check and see if the unibody hasn't been deformed or bent slightly. I'm imaging that it has been taking on some extra stress when you corner and potentially when you brake hard. Just a few thoughts, Matt

Fantastic. Not the breaking part ofcourse, the fact that it does not interfere with the ride. Will you be posting some repair photo's?
Michel

I haven't pulled it apart yet but it appears that the steering rack is all that keeps it together right now.
It's a wonder that it wasn't a far worse scenario. Repair may not have been the proper terminology, the crossmember will be replaced. If anyone wants pics of that being done let me know. |

Good thing you found that before you had a catastrophic failure on the road. I'm hoping it won't be too expensive to repair/replace. This is a good reminder why we should inspect our cars frequently. Good luck!
