Has anybody used the spare tire?

Just wondering if anybody has actually used the spare tire, jack & compressor at the side of the road or is it deadweight?

Just wondering, because I have some audio amps that will need a home . . .

Ian

I never used it but I tested it once for the same reasons - well, not an amp - but I figured if the collapsible is dead, no sense carrying it around.

Nope, it held air and collapsed back after the test. Not 100% as tight as before though, it was a tighter squeeze !

For my peace of mind, I'd keep a spare. And yes, I've used my spare...

Yes, we've used it!!! My wife & I were on I-40 back in Nov. in our '86's (returning from PorschePalooza) when she had a "rapid deflation" of a new S-03 (left rear) in her car...we were in the middle of nowhere (actually 6 miles out of Alma, Ark.)...1st time I used the spare. My thoughts were: "Is this thing going to inflate?" and "Will it be OK to get us down the road?" Luckily, the answer to both questions was yes. It takes forever for the tire to inflate, but it really looks cool as the sidewalls take shape. We found a WalMart open that Sunday afternoon, had them plug/patch the S-03, and we were back on our merry way. After being there 20 years, it still worked like a champ!

*EDIT* I'm glad it worked, as I tried "fix-a-flat" and the hole was just a tad too large for that to seal. Just fizzed and kept spitting it out when we tried to limp it away..I do carry a can in the trunk, but just glad the spare worked after the goop did not.

I'll add this: The new 987/997 don't have a spare at all, just a can of goo. I had a sidewall blow out on me in the 987 last year and the goo was useless. I got stuck waiting for Porsche assistance for 2.5 h - not in a particularly nice area either. I went out and bought a 986/996 spare and stuffed it in the car ! So no, I think losing the spare is not a good idea !

It's like insruance, you don't need it when you have it but if you don't have it, Murphy will bite you in the a$$!

I've used them- They make great weights to hold down the pop-up shade at John Walker's swap meets.

And I go home with a couple less than I brought.

What do you do if you don't have the compressor?

Can of air or something like that?

Trust me, you'll NEED the compressor. And if you don't have the factory one, there are great aftermarket ones out there for not much money. It take quite a while for the stock compressor to inflate the tire.

I used it once, the rear dunlop on the 17" blew, I rode it in the deflated shape slowly on the side for a mile to a gas station to put air in it,and then home another 40 miles, I would keep it !!

You were able to drive on the deflated spare?

Ian, I fabricated a bracked for my amp and mounted it on my spare tire. The bolt for the spare is drilled through my amp bracket.

I've never used my spare but I've checked to see if it holds air.

FYI - My MINI had no spare but had runflats which I HATED.

I swapped the heavy 17" rims and tires for 16"Kosai K1's and Yoko pradas. I then purchased a 12V pump, a tire plug kit and a can of fix a flat. I never had to use them.

I have never had to change a flat on the road but then again I am anal about tires and check them every week for inflation and punctures. Especially on my wifes car.

As soon as you take it out, you can pretty much guarantee you'll get a flat out in the middle of nowhere. It's Murphy's law.

I used a similar spare and the compressor on an Audi once. It really is a cool thing to watch. But you definitely need the compressor. It takes a while, too.

OK. You are all right, of course. If I took it out I would end up in the boonies with a flat & no cell service. At night. Cue the banjos from Deliverance here . . . I'll leave it in.

Brian

I was thinking along the same lines. My guy at Focal sent me 2 amps - a 2x75W & a 1x400W - one for the door components & one for a pair of 8" sub drivers. So I've been searching the archives for locations that make sense that will leave some trunk space for other crap. Maybe one above the wheel as you have in the shallow end of the trunk & one under the passenger seat . . .

Ian

Ian, I only have one amp. It measures 10by12 by 3 inches high. If I used a larger piece of aluminum it may work. As a side bar I was told the spare may protect the fuel tank in event of a collision. In saying that the spare is the first thing I see removed from the trunk at DE events.

How difficult is it to get a pre-99 911 flat tire in the back seat ?

I carry large trash bags just in case the flat needs to be stored.

Here is a scale picture. I'll make a board that I fasten with wingnuts to the spare. Then I can pop it off to access the spare.
