Great - new Momo wheel is stuck on steering shaft.

After proudly installing my new Momo Monte Carlo I realized it was just slightly off center and needs to move over a few splines. No problem, pop the button, undo the center nut and pull. No dice, I even turned the wheel completely around thinking it will only release in a certain position. Last attempt was with feet on dash pulling with all my might.

It seems loose enough on the shaft but something is holding it back.
HELP!

Ulrich

The adapter is allinium, Just "snatch"it it will come off. they have a tendancy to "smoosh" around the splines of the collum. It's all good

Do you have the key in and turned to the unlocked position? Some cars need to have that done to release the wheel.

I feel your pain - at least you have the correct sized socket! I got a little 'antsy' and went out to check it out. Turns out, I don't have the wright socket, so I have to go out tomorrow and pick one up! ARGH! I can only think of how the traffic is going to be!

One thing while you're taking the wheel off, I know you probably know this, and am a broken record (what's that? No, not broken - the record part?!?!?! ) but please leave the nut on slightly when pulling on the wheel. I knew a guy that kocked his front two teeth out pulling the wheel off of a '55 Chevy many years ago. He had blood everywhere too!

Later,
Mike

Thank you, problem has been solved with a few rubber mallett whacks to back of wheel. Wow, it was on there tight.

you yanking guys are insane. i almost killed myself once yanking a shifter handle off my jeep CJ. one inch lower and....i shudder to think.

i used a screwdriver thru the momo hub, and used M8 nut and bolts of various lengths (with a larger nut sitting on the steering shaft), and simply pushed the hub off the shaft. i had to change to a longer bolt twice. it worked great. (but on the slow side)
i did this a few weeks ago. i got a pic i can post tomorrow.

we may not have teeth left, but they sure do come off quick yankin g them!

Do you guys have the common "rubbing" noise with your momo wheels? I took my completly apart and lubed with dielectric grease and still it has a slight grind to it.

Andrew, that grinding noise may be a horn contact ring in need of polishing (not sanding).

"Brute force and stupidity overcomes all!"
Words to live by...

... But in this case I would recommend going to any decent autoparts store and buying a steering wheel puller. It is just a few bucks and it won't reef on all the expensive bits in the steering column.

BTW- Momo makes very pretty wheels (have one in my car) but their quality sucks! The leather discolors quickly in a way that would never happen on a factory leather wheel from Chevy. I have never seen one of their hubs that had the correct tolerances. On a previous car (not a Porsche) the hub could only be torqued to about 1/3rd of spec before the hub was pulled down to grind on the steering column.

I am not certain this link will work, but you can find the Porsche crest horn buttons to fit Momo wheels on E Bay -
Porsche Crest horn buttons

If not, my wife found mine at LTB Motorsports but I didn't see it on their site today...

On a side note- if anyone needs a 1" (25mm) spacer in black for their Momo/Sparco wheel, I have one. I inadvertently ordered two of them. PM me for details.

Hope this helps,
Mike

Good deal. Glad it worked. I'm really happy with the horn button, as well as the steering wheel. The spacer makes it perfect for me.

I don't know about you, but I don't get paid for lawn I mow... Well, that is, until the BOSS comes home and sees the nicely-manicured lawn...

Later,
Mike

This post reminds me, I have a used Monte Carlo available for any takers for $85 firm. It does not have the lumps and bumps on the grip, but is in excellent shape and has an excellent feel. Does not include hub or horn button, but hubs can be readily be found. Send me a PM if interested. Warning: You will not want to remove this wheel once installed
