84 Carrera Pic & Pans

Hi Guys,
I've sold my 76 911S. I was really impressed with a former co-workers 84 Carrera. Can anyone give me their thoughts or advice on this particular year i.e., good engine, anything to look out for that particular year? Thanks in advance.

I've got the '85 Carrera.
My best bit of advice is for you to get the new Bentley Service manual covering the 94-89 Carreras... it's great. FWIW, I think it's better than the factory manuals for the additional guidance it gives.
Also, as you have the 915 transaxle, think about putting Swepco 201 in it for smoother shifting. Search the threads here for add'l. information regarding these sometimes balky 915's.
I believe the engines to be pretty well bullet proof. After 15 years, mine shows no leaks at all & has had no rebuilds. Enjoy!
regards,
jlex.

There was an 88 911 in the paper today with 30K miles and front and back spoilers asking $34,900. That seems high. Are these models jumping up in price or is this guy nuts? That said, I like the 87 to 89 911's. Still retains the old car body but has nice upgrades, especially the transmission. Very easy to find parts and upgrades for these. The only downside is the weight and difficulty in increasing Horsepower significantly. You can't have everything, but it's close.

I own an 84 911. It's great. Nothing bad to say that doesn't also count for any other 911. If you can afford it though, the 87-89 models have the improved G50 gearbox.

I don't think a low-mileage 88 (which has the desireable G50 tranny, by the way) is outrageous at $34k. That makes sense, if it's been taken care of.

My 86, with 89K miles, was just over $19k when I bought it last year. The car now books for $22k with the current mileage (104000) on the clock. Go figure. I think the values are going up due to the reliability of these autos.

Bought my '85 911 in Dec 1996 for $20k with 60,000 miles. Sold two weeks ago at 85,000 miles for 21k. Sweeeeet.
