Short Shift kit installation

So, I've got the shift housing put together. It's not back in the car, but I wanted to see how it felt. When moving it into the 5th gear position, it requires a lot of pressure (expected, a little more than before, but new springs). But, when coming out of 5th gear position, it seems to get a little hung up against the reverse lockout. Perhaps it will be different when back in the car (different leverage perspective). Anything to worry about? Should I file anything down a bit?

Thanks guys, this posting is so helpful for any project I attempt.

Get it into the car and adjusted properly. You might find that you don't need to file anything.
What brand kit is it?

It's the factory kit. Just seems like the tab for 5th gear (the one the tab on the shift left runs along) might need to have to corner filed a bit because once the lever hits the reverse lockout, there just a hair more movement need to get it to clear that tab (in other words, the tab and the reverse lockout have it stuck in the 5th gear position). Like I said, I can eventually "force" it out, and maybe it will act different in the car.

I understand. I would still install it first. There should be a more "spring" to it being new. I modified mine and had to go back and rebend the tab on the lever to correctly grab the tang on the shifter housing.

My factory ss was just installed last week and I had the same problem. After driving the car around this weekend, it seems as if the problem went away.

I installed my factory kit and worked perfect after making the adjustments under the rear plate. Don't file or make any mods untill you install and adjust. I think will find it works right.

I don't have them handy but, there are a few real good threads explaining proper adjustments. Do a search and read before you do any un-reversable mods.
