Brake pad suggestions - 85 911
Hi all,
I have a 85 911 and we need new brake pads. I am looking for something better than the organics I can find at Kragen, PEP-boys etc. I drive mostly on the street and some Auto-x. Brake-dust is not an issue, but good cold and warm - to hot braking is. TIA Nick nhromyak@yahoo.com |

I've installed the Ferado pads in the front and rear of my '78 SC about a year ago. The stopping is very good, no squeal and minimal brake dust. Never had any problem with fadding because of heat. I would use them again. Three smiles up on Ferrado.

I use the Pagid orange, with slotted, not cross drilled rotors....BIG improvement....

I'm using Metal Masters. Despite the cheesy name they stop the car frighteningly quickly. No dust that I've seen, but they do squeal a little when hot. If I installed anti-squeal pads that would stop, but...

I've used and liked the Repco Metal Masters for 22 years, now ... on several cars, including a big Mercedes 450SE, which was notorious for short brake pad life, typically 6K miles with OEM pads, but the Metal Masters lasted 20K miles and stopped better, too!
On a 911, I have found the MM's to have less of a tendency to 'grab' or pull to one side, and they produce less dust than the OEM pads. Along the same lines as Tom Sharpes commented about tire noise on a Targa, I say ... WHAT brake noise? ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I've used Porterfield R-4 and Pagid orange on my track/street Carrera. Great on street and track. Not much warm up needed like real racing pad. Porterfield is a little cheaper than Pagid. My friend has Performance friction on his M3. Great pad too but pretty expensive.
Andy '87 Carrera P.S. Both pads squeak on normal driving condition. You gotta live with it, if you're on the performance side. [This message has been edited by andyu911 (edited 11-07-2000).] |

For most street use, metal masters are a good pad for the price. I don't think you need to spend the money for expensive track pads if your doing mostly street driving. They seem to be very clean and rotor friendly. Now if your doing heavy track use, just use a set of Pagid Orange or other higher performance pad. I learned my lesson at my last track event. I burned through a brand new set of metal masters front pads in one day. The heat evidently destroys these.
