Question Twin Plug question!!!

Hi all you twin pluggers

I'm planning to connect up my twin plugged heads on my turbo'd Carrera motor soon and I was wondering, if I use a 964/993 twin distributor, can I just use OEM 964/993 ignition leads, or will I require custom length leads made up?

I'm assuming the positioning of the lower plugs in an aftermarket application is exactly the same as on a factory twin plugged 3.6L?

I ask because I can get a good 2nd hand sent of 964 leads for $200. Much better than paying for a new set of Magnecors

that's what I did - might be some issues with age or not as good as it could be fit onto the plug tips

Thanks guys... Randy, do you mean there may be length issues?

Also, would the 964 lower valve covers bolt right up to my Carrera heads and line up properly with my lower plug holes? The machinist would have used a standard template to machine the plug holes, right?

I just put a set of 964 Beru plug wires on my twin plug conversion, the fit was great.

The Beru are OEM, they were recommended over the other wires that are available by a respected motor builder (guess who), each wire is marked for upper or lower and which cylinder it goes on, since the 964/993 distributor caps are also numbered it make installation a snap.
They fit really well.
Here’s the part number off of the box: 964 602 060 90
Pelicans part number is: 10-8533-607-M47
Apparently the 993 version (Pelican # 10-8533-116-M47) works just as well but comes with shorter coil wires which can actually be an advantage, the 964 coil wires are about 20” long, shorter is better.
The sparkplug holes in the valve covers are slightly smaller on the 964/993 than the earlier covers so also order qty 12 of the little rubber donuts that slide over the sparkplug connector.
This helps keeps crud out and cooling air in, you may only use 8, 6 on the top and #3 & #4 lower.
Depending which coils you’ll be running you may need to change the coil wire ends, it’s really easy though, they just thread on and off.
You’ll also need to cut a small oval hole in the side engine tin for the rubber grommet to go through.
I’ll be running twin HI-6’s and matching LX-92 coils.

HI the rocker covers will fit, drill the holes out and cut off the plug hole on one end off on one cover, like this, it will then clear the chain case.

Merv,

I just went through exactly what you are asking with regards to plug wires (and plugs). The only difference is that my car no longer has a distributor and is running an Electromitive Ingnition system so that added another wrinkle. The ignition is mounted on the firewall in the engine compartment, so the length of the wires needed to be modified. It previously had some Magnecors on it that were all the wrong length, so we reached out to to Steve IA and I ordered some wires from him.

I also ordered some of their billet lower valve covers as mine were just drilled like the picture above and the plugs didn't really seal very well into them.

HI Bill the ones abb' are 964 lower covers, NOT drilled ones, you can tell thay are 964 ones as they have the holes for the plug wire holders cast into them.

regards mike
