Most just have a spare dme relay. Buy a new one, fit it, keep the old one as a spare. Very cheap prevention.

I've never heard of anyone carrying a spare DME box ($900+), but as Milu said, a spare relay is essential ($30 or so)....

I bought some spare parts off of Ebay a long time ago and the owner threw in a used DME box! Kept it in the car during long trips just in case but never needed it.
There are DME boxes off of other cars (other Porsches and believe BMW's) that will work on our 911's, so I would never pay $900 for one. You can get something that will work for a lot more reasonable price. Would never drive a DME car again without a spare DME relay in the car. As well please make sure that the cylinder head temp sensor has been upgraded to the new version.
