Newbie DIY Update
So...I spend 2 solid sayd getting better aquainted with my recently bought 82 SC...
Changed the oil...feels like warm apple pie... Put in Swepco...took out the seats...claned the floor boards...installed a radio (I know sacralige...probabluy won't use it much)...swepco...(actualy 1/3 swepco 2/3 Castrol...I want to flush out any impurities...and I ran out of castrol and I cheated...)...lexol on leather...I don't like it...the seats are all sticky now... Wheel...polished with Mother's Polish WOW that is all I can say...didn't take me too long...and from the glazing paste for my body paint...I used it for the black painted parts too...it looks awesome...then I took the polishing past to my tool box wrenches too...sheesh I am crazy... So after over 20 hours of labor I felt more close to my baby...so I take her out for a drive...and she feels great...I think the new Tranny fluid made some difference...we shall see day to day...it really made a difference 2-3, 3-4,4-5...those were already good but now they are like butter...So I cruise all around town taking switch backs and curve...having an awesome time...so with my engine heated up...I notice I am a bit short on oil...so I get back home...check the dip stick...yep 1 quart short...and I F%C$ING drop the dip stick in!!!!! GODDAMN IT!!!!!!!!! After all the hard work I mess this up...I have checked that stick a million times!!!!!!!! from now on when advising someone about the idiosychrocies of 911's #1 is the dip stick...no one warned me!!! I would expect PORSCHE to pu a wire screen or something...but while trying to fish it out with a coat hanger...it goes straight to the bottom!!!!!!!! But anyways...I just needed to vent...I guess this make my first DIY service more memorable...but to all those whoe gave advice... |

My 72 911E does have wire mesh to keep things like the dipstick, rocks, etc. from dropping down into the oil tank. Wonder if yours was removed?

So you like the glaze. The glaze is good. Hope you put a coat of wax on too. The glaze offers little UV protection. Next week - turbo tie rod ends?

Most guys have luck with a second dipstick
![]() It won't hurt anything. Just get a second one. Say, what did you use to get the tranny drain plugs out? ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 |

for the tranny plugs I went to Autozone and got a set of 1/2 hex wrenches (17mm is what you need but it came in a set of 4 different sizes...pretty hard to find I picked up lthe last set...Pepboys did not have them)...then I needed a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter...I had to run to Pepboys for that...to go with my rachet wrench...don't even think about a regular allen wrench...not enough torque...and I forgot to check the torque on them...my mech says about 20-25...opps...next weeks when the car is up on jacks again for the turbo tie rods...I will check...
But I enjoy the car even more after knowing that my blood from my scaped knuckles are on my engine...really I think it is awesome...my wrench noticed my sloppy oil change work (oil in the engine bay) and chided me on that...I should know better, but he was encouraging about DIY...even though it is money lost to him... I recommend at least an oil change and tranny oil change to every p-car owner...good entry level jobs...my first oil change on any car...I think yesterday I became a real porsche owner... hmmm who was it that said he spun his 82SC in a couple of my threads? Well after my spin I had a awful fuel odor...tried to ignore it...till it when away...while the car is up I see the fuel lines leaking like crazy...I was trying to convince myself I did not need to go drop more money at my wrenchs shop...so my little excursion not only ripped my chin spoiler...cracked some already brittle fuel lines...and I think it bent a control arm...sheesh...no more spins for me |
