LA/OC/SD (SOCG) Ortega Highway Drive - January 21st

Here is the new thread, who's in:

Start Location: Starbucks on Ortega Highway - exit 5 South, make left and Starbucks is on the left hand side after the 2nd light if I remember correctly.

Date: Sunday, January 21, 2007
Start Time: Let's plan to leave at 7:30am/7:45am being the latest. Meet however around 7am.

Map to follow shortly but will probably be our usual route that we haven't driven in awhile. I'll expect a good turn out as you guys have had six months to relax. Do it for your P-car, she needs her family too.

If you are wanting to add a few miles, you can even go from Elsinore to the fire station on Ortega, head south (?) on Main Divide (a short but entertaining side road) until you get to the residential area (road becomes unmarked) then turn around, go back to Ortega then back down to Elsinore and then turn around again to go over Ortega to OC. This allow you to hit one of the best parts of the road three times.
Guys, I've always wanted to check out that side road that some of you might know about near the Summit of Ortega. It's called S. Main Dr. I've noticed it when looking at Google Maps and I always wondered if it was a driveable road. Well, I took the black Cab out today with the top down and decided to drive up Ortega and check out that road. The trip up Ortega was mostly slow due to the large number of commuters heading over the top back toward the lake and beyond. No problem though. It was such a nice day I just enjoyed the leisurely pace with the top down.

Anyway, I pulled off onto S. Main and immediately found a road that was perfect for the Porsches with almost zero traffic. The road's a pretty smooth two-lane and it leads about four miles down toward a little ranch area/homes. What an awesome road!! It's got a beautiful view of the lake to one side and a nice beautiful plateau on the other. I passed one school bus going the other way and while I was at a turnout a couple more cars came driving by. That was during 10 minutes of just sitting there enjoying the view.

I continued to the little settlement about 4 1/2 miles down the road and turned around and came back up toward Ortega. Beautiful!! Guys, this is the best 4 1/2 miles of road in the immediate area and we've never driven it. We should include this little 15 to 20 minute diversion during our run Sunday. I mean it. It will probably be the best part of the run - fun as he11 but tight enough that the speed stays entirely reasonable.

I finished with a nice clear and fast trip back down Ortega almost all the way into OC.

Chris, can you find this on your map program and show it to us please.

Here's a pic of my car at the turnout. The road is out of the picture behind me. Excuse the quality. It's a cell phone pic.

Scott,

I have been looking on Google Earth for this road for the past 1/2 hour and can't find anything that looks like the road you are talking about. I found S. Main Street off Lakeshore Dr on the other side of the Lake. Do you have any other cross streets?

Chris, just before you crest the top, on the right side of the road is a turnout to another road (S. Main). That road leads parallel to the ridge-line southbound for about five miles. It's still up on the mountain.

Here's a screen shot I took of Google Maps:

Any reason why this doesn't belong in the regional forum?

Because hardly anyone visits the regional forums.

That may be the case, but you could all start a new trend

I guarantee you that the vast majority (95+%) of readers in the 911 Techincal Forum do not care about a Southern Cal run up Ortega Highway.

Cheers,

Jeff
(who used to drive Ortega in the early 80's when it was just me and the motorcycles).

This is the way it has always been done with every run group, not just our little group (TRE's New Year's Day run, for example). It's the only way to get the announcement out to people out there who may want to do this drive. If we put it in the regional forum, nobody will see it so it'd be pointless.

Cheers!

Plus it adds excitement compared to the same 100 questions that are always asked.
