It's supposed to mean that it will be expensive to do it right and you really don't want them done wrong. The receipt for a bare metal repaint and welding on flares (no bondo, filled with brass) totalled up about $8500 in 1989.

I don't know what it costs today but I'm sure someone will chime in.

Unless you do it yourself I don't think it is worth the cost, I was quoted $5000 for a 74 911 a number of years ago. I never did it to my car. The problem is that if you get the wrong body shop, they can easily screw up your car. It's good that you are asking questions about the process but a quality Porsche shop ain't gong to be cheap. If you don't have some attachment to the car, you are much better off selling the car and buying an SC or newer. If your car is a 73S or earlier, don't even touch it, keep it stock.

$350 a side labor, rough filled with lead and ready for the painter. Painters normally prefer to do their own smoothing, whether it needs to be glazed or just primed and blocked. Otherwise, they say they can't guarantee what the final out come will be. The welding and subsequent bodywork by the welder should require no more than glaze filler.

The good shops around here quote $4k each side for metal and finish body work. Paint on top of that.

I would love to find someone who would do that work for $350 per side, you are a lucky man to have someone do it for that price.
