Targa top

Does anyone make a hardtop to put in place of the targa top. Does the 911 have too much flex to put a hard top on it. I have an '81 SC Targa.

I remember somebody made one a long time ago but can't remember who or where ! (now that was real useful info, huh? )

but IMHO, I would think that as long as it has similar soft plastic-coated pins at the back that it would stand the minor flexing that my 82 Targa generates... my older ones (pre-SC) seemed to flex a lot more than the newer ones do.

Well, the factory had a 'hard' fiberglass hardtop from 1974 ... not sure when/if it was discontinued while the original Targa was in production. There was also a translucent/clear 'smoke-colored' lexan top available from a company in NY. It was called a 'Saratoga Top,' but the seals were QUITE INFERIOR to the German rubber seals on the genuine items! Lifetime in southwest sun measured in months, not years! Ask me how I know this trivial detail!

That's it --- the "Saratoga" top was what I was thinking of --- leave it to Warren !!! --- he DOES know everything and, better yet, remembers it all!

I have seen a metal top for the 914... has anyone ever seen the same for a 911 Targa? Sure would be nice during winter and I assume a lot quieter and warmer as well.

Should not be that hard to make one... if you had a set of latches and such. Might be a neat winter project...

The fellow who runs http://www.carsinc-nj.com/ is acknowledged by many to be the Targa top authority. Note in his product listing the Saratoga top as well as a fiberglass one. The price(s) caused me a bit of heartburn. I decided that one day I'd get a factory targa frame and build a fiberglass top out of it but I'm afraid life has interfered with that plan...

I'll let you know if I ever get around to it.

On the December issue of Excellence, page 181. Check it out, it's a one piece fiberglass spare top for $299. Here's the email address: Ownersbc@gte.net

Hope this helps

schubee, ya beat me to it.

I noticed this and then realized that their price ($299) is less than my MATERIALS cost would be to build one for myself. I don't know how that makes me feel. Elated? Scared? Dubious?
