1973 911T Targa Introduction
 

Fellow Pelicans,
I have been watching and learning from this board for a while now and thought I should post some pics and introduce my 911. I bought this--my first Porsche-- in AUG 06.

Stats:
-1973 911T Targa
-2.4 engine
-5 speed 915 transmission
-About 200K miles

Modifications (all done from 1983-1984):
-PMO Webers Installed
-Steel RS Flares
-Ducktail
-Old interior replaced with mid-70s variety
-Painted Dark Blue--origionally silver

History:
I have records back to 1980
-All reciepts from california until 1997
-From 1997 until now it was in the Washington DC area.

Condition:
-No rust problems -- except some bubbles on the hood where a bra used to be and some bubbles around the windshield that are probably worse than they look--other than that pretty straight.
-Engine runs strong once warmed up

Projects so far:
-Changed fuel pump
-I stripped all the black paint from the trim and rollbar.
-Minor maintenance--changed oil/replaced valve cover gaskets/etc.

Projects working now:
-Replace black plastic mirrors w/chrome
-Replace black door handles w/chrome

Future Projects:
-Install carerra chain tensioners
-Reupholster front seats--(they aren't origional but they are comfortable)
-Replace windshield gasket--Front gasket leaks on sides

The car is a lot of fun to drive and handles really well. It took me about a year to find this one -- it's hard to find ones in the mid-atlantic without rust issues -- but I'm glad I hung in there.

Sweet ride. I'd also strip the paint off the front bumperettes.

Where in the mid-atlantic are you? I believe there are many Pelicans in the VA/DC/MD area.

the leaks might not be from the windshield gasket. you mentioned rust bubbles on the cowl. that would be my first guess, unless the windshield was replaced incorrectly at some time.

I know the windshield gasket leaks as I watched it come through when I was washing the vehicle. I am not sure about the cowl is there a tell tale symptom of a cowl leak?

I started to strip the front and back bumperettes but I have one front and rear bumperette that were origionally black from the factory --no hiding chrome. The other two bumperettes are chrome--so I will just keep them black for now.

if water is getting in through the cowl, (most likely the seam between the fender and the cowl), there will be tell-tale rust tracks on the kick panel inside, under the carpet.
btw, the 73 had unique rubber bumperettes f & r, no metal.

Thanks for the tip, I don't see any evidence of a cowl leak but I will monitor. I know the 73 should technically have the rubber bumperettes but I prefer the look of the old metal ones.

What a sweet ride. I really, really need a longhood. Funny how, IMO, PAG never managed to make them as beautiful again. The 993 may be close, but nothing beats the pre - 74 cars.

Welcome & congrats on acquiring a beautiful car. I had a leaking problem from the windshield of my '72. When I would wash the car, a little water would leak in on the driver side floorboard. When I finally removed the windshield, I found tons of rust damage in the bottom corners, and on the driver side, it had rusted part of the metal on the top of the dash under the dash pad. So, I'd check that out if I were you and hope you take care of it in time. Fun cars to drive! Good luck.
