sell the 911 for a 928??

may be considered crazy by most of this forum,

-anyone have a 928 and like/dislike it?? I'm considering trading my 83sc for an 87s4 5 speed???

any thoughts!!!-I owned one before, and liked it, now I'm just thinking about it as a change from what I've had, but I see potential big $$ to be spent if I went through with this...

got that right. a 20YO 928 always needs a lot of love. previous owners never seemed to be able to afford to fix much on them, so now it's all up to you.

I've heard the same. A PITA to maintain and fix.

One of the most expensive Porsche's to own.

But then again, I've never even driven one.

Owned a 928 for 4 yrs. Awesome car - they truly were years ahead of their time. Sold mine last year, it was an 85.

I was too afraid something was going to break, so I bought a 911. Much more fun. The 928's are a mechanical/vacuum/electrical maze...

it's funny, I had an 87 for 2 yrs from 2000-2002, and never had any problems. I did the timing belt/pump big service and then just drove it.. but now that they are that much older I'm also cautious, -the car I'm looking at looks pretty nice, bottom line is I love my sc, but I do alot of highway driving, for which a 928 would be great, but not if its going to be a headache to keep on the road. andway, we'll see....

Wow.

I've been doing the same mental exercise myself. Love my car, but with a 30 mile highway commute each way, I would love to get behind that big V8 and just enjoy the ride.

Of course, my wife says I'm crazy. She knows how much work I've put into my SC. I've thought about having both, but with a two car garage, it just doesn't make sense.

If I were to do it, I would go with the 89 928. I like the newer look, big 5.0 engine, etc.

Yes, it is a real good highway express. But realistically a notorious money pit. Unfortunately.

why not a 944 turbo? even with the turbo, a nice sorted one is really cheap [esp. in comparison to a 928] plus, much easier to keep running, and better looking imho

Head to head comparison of a well maintained 951 vs a 928 I'd buy the 928. A forced induction car always tempts you to squeeze JUST a little bit more out of it.

I echo everyone's statement that 928's are expensive but I would love to have one. An S4 is a powerful car and with a 5 speed would be lots of fun. Learn how to do the timing belt, front seals yourself and run if it has had aftermarket electrical work like stereo and especially an alarm system installed.

With full reocrds and a minimum of previous owners I might take a chance. Let us know what you decide to do.

Since you asked...

A few more years and the sc will qualify for antique/historic tags. Keep it and buy a daily driver.

Then enjoy the sc as a hobby.

Looks like I'm the only one here who can give a valid opinion.

The 928 is an unbelievable car. As John W. points out, many are used and abused 'cuz guys couldn't really afford to run them. I think there are as many good ones out there as there are rats. Rennlist is the place for the 928 forum, BTW.

I spent more on my 911 in its 1st year than I have on the 928. The 911 needed a lot of aesthetic work, which as we all know can get expensive. I learned all about bargain Porsches from this.

On the 928, I bought a low mileage, pristine version, and paid top dollar. It's my opinion that this has paid off in low $ needed. I stay up on maintenance on my cars, and keep them in great shape, so I hope to not see any surprizes. With this plan in place, they are more to maintain than your average car, but then again the others aren't Porsche's idea of what a touring car should be. These are P-cars, and go for a long time.

Electrics are somewhat over-talked-about. If you have a good car, and it's all grounded, I don't see any more issues on Renn than I do here. The vacuum system can be frustrating, Porsche used it to power the HVAC actuators. I just replaced two of them for $140, but they should be good for another 15 years.

To me, it's like Bruce Anderson always states for any Porsche: You're better to buy the newest best example you can find.

If you get serious on this, jump on Rennlist and introduce yourself. Chances are there is a rabid owner or two near you that you can meet and look at their cars. The braintrust on that board will support and help as much as the guys over here do for 911s.

The way I see it, if I want to go out for a fun drive, I'll take the 911. If I need to drive somewhere, I'll take the 928 (and have fun).

PS-Get an automatic. The later cars have a 4 spd built by Mercedes, and it's a TANK. With 325lb-ft of torque, these babies cruise. The only issue I have with th 5 spd, other than wanting a cruiser with no shifting, is that the tranny had a dogleg 1st. I didn't want to deal with it and have my brain do something stupid in the 911 with 1st gear where it should be while I'm at the track.

Unless you purchase one that has had all the regular issues taken care of, replaced, fixed, then run from it..........Or purchase one that is extremely low milage like Ed did. I have had two, an 84 that had the cold start injector stick and flood the engine blowing out every seal and head gasket then hydro locking the engine bending the rods.
Then my second one was an 89 that had the TB/WP replace one year prior and the WP failed (rebuilt) A/C vac pods cracked and thus replaced. I was not a happy.
I am extremely happy with the 911 I just purchased ( had a PPI done but didnt on the 928's) it feels much more like a sports car to me and thats what I was originally looking for.
The 928 is a GT dont forget it. Because if you like the the 911 sports car feel you will miss it.
You are looking at apples and oranges.

LOL best edit i can accomplish for now I m offically crowned royally
