Bursch Muffler & 911SC
Back to the Bursch muffler topic
I have a 1979 911SC with a totally stock exhaust system. Is the Bursch muffler a bolt-in replacement for the stock muffler? Also, the previous owner gave me a catalytic "test" pipe. (replaces the catalytic converter) If I install it will I notice any difference in performance? I've read this is supposed to give you an increase of 8 h.p. - sounds too good to be true.

The cat test pipe will not give you any additional power, unless there is something wrong with your cat.
The problem with the SC cross-over exhaust is *not* a flow or restriction problem. Its a tuning problem. Adding the Bursch is not going to do anything either. In fact (my opinion only), I don't know why people would remove one of the most beautifully made, high quality, expensive OEM stainless steel mufflers ever put on a car to put on one of the *worst* made, poor quality, domestic made mufflers out there (Bursch). From a materials (cheap, low quality, thin mild steel), assembly (low quality control, poor fit and finish, including paint that is a JOKE) and aestetics (ugly, rusting tubes visibly hanging below your valance like we used to see on VW bugs in the '70s) viewpoint, the Bursch has little going for it. Just my opinions. YMMV. |

I'd agree w/ Jim's opinion on quality of the Bursch. It will add absolutely no power, just noise. Dyno tests show no gain. I've been told that the test pipe DOES add 5-8 hp, based on people who have had it on the dyno. I've never seen those sheets, though, so who knows?
If you want more power, go with SSIs. Greg |

Sorry, I disagree with the above. Dropped cat and added bursch muffler and improved my 0-60 times from 6.32 best to 6.18 best over several runs.
Believe it or not, many small differences add up...I recommend dropping cat, adding bursch, adding k&n cone....all of those in combination are responsible for my 0-60 improvements. ------------------ Kurt B 1984 911 Carrera Cabriolet 75 914 1.8 |

For Jim T
Spoken in classic journalistic, Jim Lehrer, presidential debate moderator voice: Well, Jim. Other than those few minor things, can you tell us how you really feel about Bursch's proposal to be the sole source provider for future Porsche exhaust development projects? David |

In my opinion, adding a Bursch system (either headers or muffler or both) to a 4cyl. will make for better performance. Adding one to a 6cyl. will not.

Guys, I agreee the Bursch muffler by itself on a later car will not add any/much power and in fact will probably adversely alter drivability! BUT, in conjunction with backdating a 2.7 or SC to the early style exhaust (SSI's, headers or factory boxes) you WILL gain significant power.

I have some dyno results using SSI's, and European racing headers with a bursch, flowmasters and factory sport exhaust. That darn bursch was costing me about 12hp! The factory sport muffler produced the best power.

The only advantages of the Bursch over the factory 2in/2out sport are slightly lower cost, and slightly lower dB levels...personally, I s#!^canned both of my Bursch-es.
