Spark plug gap
I have been using NGk B8ES spark plugs for my 72 911S. According to the Haynes manual, the spark plug gap of the Bosch W265P21 would shoud be 0.020 to 0.024 in. The gap of B8ES is wider than that. Do you think that the B8ES gap should be within the same range? Please geive me any suggestions or comments.
Thank you. |
Well, I've used 0.028" to o.o32" gaps in Champion N3-G plugs for years, and it has construction similar to the NGK's. I have heard of NGK users using the same gap range with good results!

Thank you,Warren.
I have had '72 911S for 7 years. I am not sure, but I think the B8ES is for the modern computerized enigines which have higer voltage from the coil. But since our early 911 has lower voltage, 15000 volts, the sparl plug gap should be narrower than B8ES or N-3G. Is that right?? |
Actually the Bosch CDI system in our cars can put out 35-46 kV, since it has a 100:1 coil and the primary pulses are 350 V. to 460 Volts, per the service manual ... I don't really know why those Bosch 'P21' plugs are gapped so narrow, other than that's what worked in the 906E, 907, and 911R race cars that the CDI-units were first developed and tested in ... in 1967-68! I used to have a '78 vintage Bosch sparkplug usage chart, and I believe a gap of 0.028" was shown for W260T2 plugs in our engines.

I know this is an old thread, but I now have the same question about the proper gap for the NGKs in my '73S. Warren and Ithaca, are you still running .028"-.032"?
|
I've been gapping mine at .060" for years without any problems, but then I'm running HEI ignition with only 40kV on tap.
