Structural question...

Ok, I stole the picture, but I needed it for an example. The weld on my car is broken, it's in the area in yellow in the picture below. It's the piece behind the reflector, and sort of under the engine compart. rubber seal. I don't believe it's a structural piece. I plan on getting it fixed, but thought I would ask in the meantime.

Also, any thoughts of what could cause this? It's ever so slightly rusted on the "broken" edges. I do think my light lense is leaking in the upper right hand corner. Road spray maybe. I suppose the rain channels dump water down there as well.

Thanks,
Todd

No significant structural contribution. It's just a thin panel to mount the rear reflector to. In fact, the early cars have nothing here.

The crack is likely from a previous parking lot tap that didn't get full repaired.

But since I can't see where it is exactly, I can't say for sure. That area where the quarter panel meets the latch panel is leaded in, BTW.

Ok, it's official then!! I won't worry about it until it's time for major body work (which could be some time to come).

Thanks guys!!!!

at the very least, primer it if it's raw metal to prevent rust

not structural, can be caused by hard driving twisting of the body as well
