Gear shift lever popping out of 1st. Why?
Guys,
I was driving my 1987 Carrera the other day, practicing hard acceleration from a complete stop. At one point towards the upper range of RPM's the rear wheels started hopping, the shift lever popped out of the 1st gear, I think I heard a grinding noise (not sure), followed by an overwhelming smell of clutch. At the time I wasn't holding the lever, having placed both hands on the steering wheel. Should I have kept one hand on the lever? Or is this a precursor for things to come (aka $$$$). The clutch is about 75% worn out. Any ideas what might have went wrong? TIA Boris 1987 911 Carrera 3.2 [This message has been edited by bpcsguru (edited 11-21-2000).] |

there may be several things contributing to this, but the fastest and easiest fix is putting new transmission fluid in.
seems like it doesn't make that much of a difference, but i've heard of that happening in friend's 911s and they changed to a synthetic fluid, put in new shifter bushings, and the problem went away. good luck! obin |

Hate to say it but...
My car hopped a lot for a month or two as well under hard acceleration (right after starting off). A few months later, I was taking off and it popped out of first. By the time I was on my way home from work that day, it wouldn't go into first at all. You can guess the rest. Drain the fluid and look for dog teeth. If you don't see any, good, if you do, just have it towed for a rebuild. ------------------ Kurt B 1984 911 Carrera Cabriolet 75 914 1.8 |

You guys are nuts! What kind of racing do you fellas watch? The kind that features the likes of John Force and Joe Amato or races involving Hurley Haywood and Hans Stuck?
