Sunroof installation question

73 911 E

Two questions.

1. The sunroof seals: On my sunroof they are glued to the complete circumference of the sunroof. Having read the tech article they should be attached to the car chassis in the front and sides, and only the rear seal attached to the sunroof, correct?

2. How are the rear seals cut exactly to mate with the front/ side seals? Do I leave them both a bit long, install and close the roof then cut and glue the ends.

Any tricks to the trade would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Check out this thread:
Sunroof cable repair and new seals 87 911

1. Correct. The front seal is glued to the car to the front and side lips of the sunroof, while the back felt seal and rubber gasket are glued to the sunroof panel itself.

2. I didn't cut mine. For the front seal, I glued the two ends of the front seal so they kind of curled under the lip on the car. Here is the pic from the thread I posted the link to above:

I was just going to post that thread. It is extremely detailed and was a real help for me when I tackled this job. Much thanks to jhubs of Fort Collins, CO.

Great write up. Exactly what I was looking for.

I bought a new cable and am having difficulty getting it into the track. The tech article says a part on the new cables needs to be filed down as they are not really designed for pre 89 cars. It's not clear what needs to be filed. Any insight?

Thanks Again,

Chris

one side of the slider block obviously won't fit the old track. you carefully grind it to fit. you also need to unwind the fuzz on the entire cable or it will drag heavily.

wow, the was a PITA but it came out nearly perfect so I am happy. Getting the roof to pop up in the back was an obsticle. For anyone else reading this it came down to making sure the thing that attaches the roof to the cars/cable is positioned correctly (90 degree angle) and that it is not set too high as it will never get there.

only mistake is I got a spot of sealant on the back seal. Very small deal but is there a way to get it off.

Thought you might be kidding on the 3m Adhesive remover but googled it and there is it is. :-)...to obvious a solution.

Well here she is. I think it came out great. Roof opens and closes effortlessly and seals tight. Very hard to tell where the seams between the front and rear seals are.
