New guy hello; and '78 sc speaker deck question.

Hey folks:

Have a '78 sc that is my introduction to Porsches. Whattacar! Brit cars all my life, and now something that doesn't need to have the tub and panels rebolted to the frame after every drive (kidding, but...). Yeah, I miss my '69 B and my '74 TR6, but this Porsche is everything I could ask for.

Now my question: The PO put a speaker deck setup behind the rear seats. He put cheezy speakers in by punching the deck out and dropping the speakers in, thereby destroying the original "holed" fabric covering.

So, I will recover the deck with fresh material, and want to know if anyone knows of a place that sells reproduction material with the holes in it. Failing that, I will drop a set of decent speakers, probably oval-shaped, to cover the semi-damaged area in my rear deck. Can anyone tell me what is the depth that the speaker CANNOT exceed in order to clear the area under the rear deck?

Thanks mightily,
Jdub

Hey, welcome aboard! I can't help with the speaker depth question, but a good source for replacement pieces (in addition to our gracious host, Pelican) is Doc 'N' Cy's in Indiana.

This is not going to help with the exact depth either.
However, the answer given to me by the "expert" who replaced my speakers was not much depth at all. Certainly not sufficient to provide enough air volume for any meaninful bass response. His advice was to put quality speakers into the doors and adjust the sound so that, say, 80% is directed to the "good" ones in the doors and 20% to the back.

2 inches is the max depth for rear speakers. suggest plate version, they are flush on top and shallow on the bottom. 81'SC

When I had my speakers on the back deck replaced they installed an extension plate under the speaker so it would have more clearance. Otherwise you are very limited by what kind of speaker you can put on the back deck.

Rod Birch is a friend and must say his knowledge of installation is extensive. When I ordered the sub enclosure he came to my place in Sac (he lives here)and did the measurements...(I went with a larger sub than he ususally uses in his enclosures)..We worked together and he did a great job and personnaly did the install and tweak. Glad to see he has opened his own shop here in Sacramento. he also gave me the dimensions for the enclosure for my 944. Built the box and he was impressed by the quality of sound. Give him a yell. He will be only too glad to help you!
