Accelerator Cushion Installation

I removed my accelerator cushion for inspection as this is a common point of failure in the throttle linkage. Now that I am about to reinstall it, I would like to know if their is a preferred way since the rubber inside the metal case has some play?

1) Center rubber insert?
2) Rubber insert to right?
3) Rubber insert to left?

Go to ACE and get a 6mm nut extender ( I think thats what it is called )basically it is a long nut so as to inset the rod in ea end.
And eliminate the whole thing ( 60cents) end of problem.

If you leave out the rubber coupling you will damage the carb linkage, bend the throttle plates, lose your hair and be audited by the IRS.

T-Rone,

The accelerator cushion should have an open end and a closed end to the safety cover.

As I recall, Porsche put the closed end rearward toward the engine.

I lube or use Anti-Sieze on all the threads and under the jamb nuts.

I tighten the rod to the bell crank onto the cushion first with it on the bench. Once the jamb nut is tight, the rubber cushion should be firm in the safety cover – no rattle. I then spin the assembly onto the rod from the tunnel and tighten that jamb nut. Don’t twist the rubber in the cushion. Be sure the ball-cup is positioned to go on the ball at the transmission bell crank. Now you can lube the ball cup and pop it on and (using dish soap) get the rubber boot on the cushion. (note that the boot protects the open end of the cushion from road conditions.)

Once the cushion is in place, there shouldn’t be any play in the linkage other than the slight deformation of the rubber in the cushion.

Now you get to re-adjust all your linkage. You want full throttle but not stress the accelerator cushion with the throttle body against its stop. The accelerator pedal stop should limit the travel at full throttle and not the throttle body.

Best,
Grady
