3.2 computer help

Can anyone help me find a reasonably priced (used or rebuilt)computer for an 86 3.2?So far I've only been able to come up with a new one for $1800.00.Does anyone rebuild them? Thanks.

Try Vertex or a used one from Stuttgart Haus in NC. Both advertise in Excellence..

First call ,of course, should be to give the guys that host our coveted web forum a chance...

Keep an eye out on both Pelican and Rennlist, as well as Ebay.

I picked one up, (the whole DME computer box, not just the chip) with a reworked chip already installed, for $125 four months ago. Been driving it since that time with no problems and 22 mpg.

Sometimes you get lucky.

I would shop a round a bit longer...that price is outrageous. When I was researching Porsche maintenance and repair costs, I called several places for ECU replacements just to see how expensive they would be. NO ONE was anywhere near that price for a Carrera....I think the highest price was on the order of $800 for your type of car and about $1200 (from a dealership) for a '90s C2.

You might look at some of the parts recyclers that advertise in Excellence magazine too.

Good Luck,

Hi EZ911,
We have all our computers rebuilt around $695.00 or...........I see you are a commercial fisherman.....well you know Roy loves fishing about as much as I do Porsches, you wouldn't have a Penn International just laying around would ya or????? http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif

One note do make SURE you need a computer and not something else.

Thanks again for all the imput,I now have some place to start.I've done all the tests I could using the Bentley manual(very handy, but has some omissions),I'm 90% sure it's the computer. If I had one that was good I would know for sure, lacking that I'll have to roll the dice.I need to get it up and running,I have a Whipple charger kit sitting in the box waiting to be installed. No fishing poles Roy,I deal exclusively in shellfish.

I would search on the list and see if there is someone local to you in NY and maybe buy them lunch and a cold one to try the brain before you buy one yourself, it only takes less then 10 minutes. One question have you "smelled" your brain? If it is recently burnt you WILL smell it pretty strong or open it and see if you can see what has burnt. We have been seeing more and more brains coming in because of water sneaking onto the floor where the brain lays, the carpet gets wet and bye bye brain.

EZ,

Have you tested the DME relay out of the car? The relays fail, probably more often than the DME unit themselves, and a spare on hand is a good idea, for those situations when you don't have time to dig out the Bentley manual and a Digital multimeter!

Do a search of the pelican archives on 'DME relay' and you will find a test procedure.

Thanks to Roy,and early s man.I have had the computer out,and open.Nothing appears to have burn't,but it's not the original.I have no prior history on the car,I bought it at auction.the computer has WORLD PAC 99 written on the outside of the unit in magic marker(anyone hear of WORLD PAC?),and it has a 28 prong chip in it.The 86 3.2 comes with a 24 prong chip,28 prongs are suppose to come in the 87.If it's an 87 box ,it was working fine until the engine quit(no spark). So now I'm in the hunt for a box, reasonable priced, because I'm not 100% sure of the problem.Roy,I'll probably call you tommorrow,I want to check a few more sources for the best price. Thanks for all the imput.

EZ,

Is there anyone near you with a DME 911? If you can pull their computer out of the car, switch it to yours and confirm that it is indeed the computer, that would make me feel better about buying a new or OH unit.

If I were closer (am in Dallas) would bring mine over and let you try it but NY is a bit far! Takes 10 minutes to switch them out...
