Rear end noise?

I get a whine noise when I let off the gas from 50 down to 40 mph in any gear in my 1984 911. I assume this is a rear end noise. Is it possible that a change to Swepco would help? Is this a rear end problem?
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,

I have serious doubts that Swepco will help at all.

The most likely cantidates inside the 915 are the pinion bearing, and the two differential carrier bearings ... and there is also the possibility that it is one of the rear wheel bearings. Pinion bearing would get my vote as most likely! If you can determine if the noise is worse, or lightens up when you coast through a wide, sweeping turn to the right or left, then a wheel bearing would seem to be indicated.

Warren,
Thanks for the info - do you have an idea of the cost of this type of repair? I don't think it is a wheel bearing.
Thanks,
Paul
