Lic Plate Lights wiring -78SC

Trying to avoid a possible ticket...

I am going to return lighting to the rear lic. plate lights located at the bumperettes. The PO's shop cut the wires during a motor install (I assume). They are too short to reach past muffler and I cannot locate for sure the source wiring to hook them back up.

I think the originals are located in the rear fenders, near where the wire loom mounts go through the engine compartment but I don't see anything hanging around in there.

Does anyone know where the source wires are located?

I'd rather not pull the muffler to get access - can you remove the bumper without removing the bumperettes?

thanks.

If I remember correctly from my recent engine drop....

I think saw the wires following the inside of the rear bumper to the connectors that carry the power to the taillights.

I think...

Yes. Bumperettes can stay on.

I have he Bently - but it states to pull the bumpettes first to gain access to remove the trim rubber - so I assume I can remove the trim rubber from under the bumperettes to gain access to the bolts that hold the muffler on?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, the rubber trim strips can be removed, to access the bumper nuts, without first removing the bumperettes.

Mike
I went a little further back and got to them behind the taillights. Very easy access.

Thanks JR, I'll give that a try. I cant reach the bumperettes nuts from behind because of the muffler (too little room) - so being able to take the bumper off without having to remove the muffler will save a lot of time.

emac - can you explain a little more? Are the wires in the tail light loom?

Why not run a pull wire through the bumberette and connect your wires to that and pull them in?
There is a small hole in the rear bumper behind the bumperette.

Mike

When I removed my taillight asmb. there was a large loom of wires wrapped with tape. But I seen as I recall two wires running to the rear of the car. I was able to follow them back to the plate lights.

Mike .... if it helps any, I have photos of entire rear section .... wide open views with bumper removed for stainless exhaust install.

In the photo posted here, the license light leads are the long ones dangling far left and far right. Two wires on each side (+/-), sheathed together in single brown vinyl tubing. ('76 930 .... likely the same for '78 ... ???)

More photos / different angles HERE .......

------------

Hope it helps a bit .....

Rick

Excellent - thanks all.

I did see the two wires dangling and figured that has got to be them, however when I tried testing them with a voltmeter they were dead. More investigation is in order...

Rick - absolutly awesome 930. Your photos are a big help... OT, but I have a broken fender extension strut, the short one in the back, do you know if the 930 and 911 narrow body fender extension struts are the same?

do your fog lights work? I noticued that when I was trouble shooting my non-operational fog lights that the license palte lights were also not functioning when my running lights were turned on. Once I fixed the fog lights (PIA do to several things being broken), the last thing I replaced was the fog lamp fuse in the long fuse box on the driver's side in the trunk, and my license plate lights began to function.

Just a thought of a way to deliver power to those wires you think are for the license plate.

Mike--
Just a thought - did you have the headlights on when you tested them? Pretty sure that the license plate lights only work when headlights are lit...

BTW, if anyone knows what the replacement bulb number is, I'd be most appreciative. The existing bulbs have no markings and the Bentley information is wrong (wrong bulb #).

Fog lights are working, fuse #2 is good - The Bently electrical diagrams show the lic plates lights and the fog lights power originating from this fuse; I did pull it and now have non-functioning fog lamps to protect the wiring from any shorts that may be causing the lic plate lights not to work.

I didn't test the wires with the headlights on as I recall; I think I only tried it with the parking lights on, maybe that's why I'n not getting voltage at the hanging wires. Definately worth a look.
