ignition switch installation

While testing a new ignition switch I found that it turns to the first and second detent but not to the "start" position. The vendor says it will turn to "start" after installation. Why wouldn't it work "normally" outside the car? I'd hate to reinstall it (not a fun job) only to find out it was defective. Anybody got any experience with this proceedure or know any "secret" Porsche G2?

The electric portion? I recently replaced mine. I could use a large phillips head screw driver and replicate normal function - i.e. turn to 1st, 2nd and start locations.

Once it goes to start, it locks you out and you can't turn past 2nd indention. You have to back it to 1st (or maybe off) position to re-engage.

Hope this helps.

Hey Skip,
Yea, I removed the electric portion and it operates normally. It's the rest of the switch (including the steering wheel lock mechanism) that I'm wondering about. In my old switch after the "start" lockout sequence I had to remove the key in order to be able to start it. It became unreliable and then it wouldn't go to "start" under any circumstances. With the new switch, electrics on or off, it won't go to the "start" position ever. I can't see what difference it would make wheather the switch is mounted or not. The vendor assures me it will work.

Sorry. Hopefully someone else that knows what they're talking about will chime in.

Mystery sol-ved!
The new switch's spring is so strong that I couldn't turn it to "start" with the OEM key, which has an extremely small head. I'll need to have a more user-friendly key made. I also discovered that if the electric portion is removed it WON'T turn to "start" but couldn't figure out why. In conclusion: it works equally well in the car or out.
