Deck lid latch alignment
 

Is there a procedure for aligning the deck lid latch? I’ve done a search and haven’t come up with anything on alignment. What I did come up with is the usual problem of the latch not releasing. I installed a new deck lid with Carrera tail and after closing the lid, yep, it wouldn’t release…. After a week, many four letter words, and much frustration it finally came open. I subsequently installed the Weltmeister dual shock kit but don’t like the way it cocks the lid. As my 88 has the shock bracket on the body for a passenger side shock, I fabricated a bracket for the passenger side hinge and now have one shock per side. The lid now raises and lowers much better.

So the lid will “pop” open better I put a few washers under the latch spring to give it a little more poop. Now, is there any way to align the latch prior to closing the lid to avoid the four letter words and not have it get stuck again?

The plunger "archs" in such a way that you have to move the plunger ever so slightly rearward from what appears to the centered. Then, when fully depressed, it's centered.

You may need a dual shock setup as the single shock is not able to lift the extra weight of the tail.

Put a piece of wide masking tape over the latching hole. Gently lower the deck lid until the point of the latch makes an impression in the tape. You should be able to tell easily which way to move the latching assembly bolted to the lid. Replace the tape each time to make certain you are in the right spopt.

Fred, Excellent idea. I'm headed that way. I'll put some blue chalk from a chaulk line on the tip of the latch to see where it hits....
