Master cylinder removal help please.
I'me in the process of removing the master cyl on our 74'.
I have removed the mounting nuts, the 2 fluid lines & the dust boot. There are another 2 lines going into the top of the master cyl. It looks like they are steel tube, going into rubber grommets? I cant feel any nut, neither is there provision for spanner room! How do i get these off the master cyl? HELP ![]()

The steel tubes just slip into the rubber boots. They come out fairly easily if you can pry them away from the master cylinder while tipping the cylinder so they come out at an angle. They are harder to remove by forcing them straight up. My old boots were still in good shape, but soft enough to pry the steel lines out.
Good luck.

Hey, after i pulled the master cyl; [went to the pub] i noticed that with it removed, i can still push the brake pedal to the floor, & the pedal doesn't return!
In fact, its still as hard to return with it hooked up. I'me thinking the return spring on the pedal shaft is caput! Where do i even start to look for one of these?

Another part to add to the Pelican ordering list!
What i wanted to know was: should the brake pedal be so stiff to move?

Coolngroovy- I would also check the plastic bushings that the clutch and brake pedal shafts ride in. Was your master cylinder leaking? If it was leaking the fluid may have attacked and soaked into the bushings causing them to swell, and causing the shafts to bind up and cause your pedal to stick and return slowly. Pelican sells the pedal cluster rebuild kits. Get the bronze bushing kit. Did both my SC and the 914. Easy and smooths out the pedal feel.
Cheers, Cooper

G'day Cooper,
The master cyl wasn't leaking. The brake pedal was sticking. When i removed the master cyl, the pedal is still very stiff! I think too stiff! I'll pull the pedal assembly out & go over it at work. Thanks for the bushing tip! Cheers
