a HELLA LOTTA LIGHT! part du

well after careful mounting considerations. trying to figure angle of dangle of light beams while hood on saw horse as best as possible. we mounted the lights and had a couple buddies and my younger son help mount hood. taking the carbon fiber hood off was literally as fast as (4) allen heads and it was off(yes we marked location on both sides hinges w/sharpy for next install). aligning the rally hood with all the weight forward was a little more time involving. up/down/up/down loosen tighten etc.

when finished we noticed space on drivers side, above RUF bumper. as much as we read and played with alignment we couldnt get it to go away. finally in a fit of brilliance we noticed that the hood was tweaked a tad bit drivers side middle along the reinforcement ribbing. that solved that dilemma. a little hood tweaking by our argentinian bodyman, and possibly some type of welting btwn hood and RUF bumperand that will be solved.

question????? what kind of welting would be best?

part 3 will include in depth wiring and illuminated(red hella/push/pull) switches mounted center cockpit so either driver or navigator can switch off in event of oncoming traffic or a cop! using hella wiring harnesses made for hella 4000 compact install. will utilize quick-discos so as to make removal simple.

part 4 will include pics of lights being aimed.

part 5 will include pics of MELTING BUMPERS and CACTUS!

part 6 will include how we redesigned PVNGS (palo verde nucklar generating station) small enough to fit into glovebox area!!! actually much thanks to DAVE B. @ TRE for doing amp chart drawdown for all acc. on car that may be used while lights on. bottomline the stock OEM alt. will work fine.

entire front end has been given 3M cleartape and all hella lights have clear stay-on all the time light covers. hella h-4's have clear covers from air-tek new zealand!

AND YOU THOUGHT WE WERE JUST KINDA SICK! LOL!

Chuck, if you travel at the speed of light, what happens to your headlights?

But seriously, nice work, those should light things up nicely.

You may want to consider the AASE super-alternator, Pelican sells them.

john, from your own point of view nothing as the speed of light is independent of your reference frame a la special relativity

hey thank you for the kudos. biggest fear..........hitting livestock/deer/elk/big jackrabbits at night! hit big assed jack rabbit years ago in datsoon 280-z scca car and wiped out air dam,a/c condensor, valance and the RADIATOR! stuck outside gila bend ,az. at 2am in the morning. not fun! lots of open range here and thats not including making a run across the indian rez to durango or towards utah, let alone san diego or towards new mexico. all 4 points of the compass have hazards.

indian rez is just like mexico driving at night! DON'T do it, if you dont have to!

the wiring quick disconnects are next. then the aiming process. aiming process will take some patient tweaking on wall of driveway which has about a 3 degree slope on it. will drive car onto some plywood to balance and then check with level. going to aim outboard lights outward and inboard will be aimed to achieve as much straight vision as possible.

once we get hood aligned, will mark with sharpy pen the hinges to facillitate easy on/off in the future. the dzus fasteners on actual f/glass light pod that we got from DAVE B.@ TRE are only for removing fiberglass pod,and servicing light bulbs. if so inclined you could fab up brackets so lights attach to pod and remove all 4 lights at one time from hood.

we opted to mount lights directly to hood. reasons being theft/rigidity of lights. also the hood was off another car that had been wrecked hence the tweak in it. my stock oem hood is stashed away until i get the energy to sand down smooth and shoot color on again due to PITA rock chips.

our goal was/is to make it a simple removal/install and once aligned and marked should not take more than 15 minutes with 3-4 guys holding hood and tighten/loosen the (4)allens on hinge.

we stayed w/stock hella 12v 55w bulbs on the 4000 compacts as per dave b.@TRE. the hella compact 4000's came as EURO BEAMS from hella.

when we decide to go back on track, either carbon/fiber hood or stock oem hood will be easy change. carbon/fiber hood i would loose points per PCA/SCCA ruling. when they say stock class...........they MEAN......"EXACTLY AS IT CAME OFF SHOWROOM FLOOR"! interesting article in PANO last month about how PCA is going to really tighten up scrutiny on showroom stock classes for cheaters across the nation. in showroom stock you are allowed (7) points for modifications. if you excede (7) points you are bumped into modified class and then your chances of surviving are about NIL, with a stock engine!

just don't follow any soft-window convertibles too closely, they melt way before bumpers and cacti.

if your interested in really lighting up the night.........HELLA offers the rally 4000's and 4000 compact in XENON!

xenons offered in pencil beam and euro beam. produces 2.5 times the light than standard halogen bulb but only draws 2.9 amps.

on baja unlimited class vehicles we are now seeing up to 10-12-14 xenon lights on vehicles. if you look at them they WILL BLIND YOU!

drawback..............very spendy and you better chain them down or WELD mounting nuts due to thieves!!!!

Charles, that looks great! As for "welting", I found the 964 "smilie" worked out great for my application. Fills in the space perfectly.(attached pic).

Yes Charles, it is the standard OEM part from our sponsor. Be careful when you order, however...Whenever I ordered mine, I had to talk them through on the part, as it was labeled wrong on the site. Fits perfectly! Thanks for the compliment, that's the wife's car we finished this winter.

Well, we built this one up for her so we had "matching" '86's. Yes, the smile is one piece, just mounted it between the bumper at the pre-drilled spots. The ends are finished off so it looks factory-installed instead of a rough cut-off look at the wheel wells. In the "hood area", there are 4 holes in the smile. Simply drill and attach to the bumper there as well. (I used some large round plastic "Push-in" fasteners there. Left a very clean look) At first, it was VERY snug, but after a few cycles, it "seated-in" quite nicely...If you need close-ups, I'll take some pics when the wife gets home this evening.
*Edit* Forgot to add, no front-mounted oil cooler, just the stock unit in the right wheel well, with the addition of the little "scoop" in the place of the running light. (you can JUST barely see it in the picture) Works great.

roux roux thanks alot for your time. you should be very proud of that car. just noticed your from the bayou and your not getting the extreme heat like we are here in az. oil cooler got expensive real quick w/aircraft fittings and lines tied into right fender cooler. but even on a hot day here it now never runs over 200 degrees w/a/c on full blast! thanks again. will be ordering welting from pelican.

can you post the part number for the correct 964 smile rubber, to maybe save time for others needing to order this part for RUF bumpers?

thanks :-)

The Pelican part # is 964-505-143-01-01C-M260

The problem is when you are searching, the part description DOES NOT jive with the diagram they have posted. On the diagram, it should be #1, NOT #2 (which in the diagram is the front bumper facing strip)...but when you search and enlarge the picture, it becomes clear. I had to point that out when I placed my order.
