New Guy here, couple of questions

Hello, new to the world of Porsche's after having looked from afar for a long time. I very happily bought a 1987 Targa two weeks ago and have been aggressively reading posts here to learn as much as I can for the last month.

Two questions--first, any members in the Westchester NY area who might be willing to take on an apprentice/observer for any mechanical projects? I am fairly mechanically adept, but obviously new to these cars. It would also just be good to know someone close by when I foul something up.

Second, can anyone help me to figure out what color my baby is? I think it's too blue to be Diamond Blue metallic, but it's not that far off. Were there other metallic light blue colors in 1987? More curiosity than anything.

My first project is to drill out a couple of broken lug nuts which some nob CRANKED on the front left wheel dry, probably after doing the NY state inspection last year. (I'm 225 and had to bounce on the end of my 18" breaker bar to get then loose, resulting in the breakage). But I have read up here, have the hole saw, and once I get the new nuts I ordered from our host, I will get to drilling!

Thanks to everyone here--I'm happy to be a part of this big Porsche family.

Welcome aboard...sorry, no answers to your questions. The '87 models are "new cars" from my perspective, and I live on the west coast.

Welcome - 1987 is the best year - ok, besides the 1972s that paul drags around...

From the picture, it looks like more an Iris Blue found on the earlier carreras.

These are from www.paintscratch.com

The paint code is typically on the passenger side wheel well - just lift up the carpet.

I was going to say Iris blue too... that is the same color my 74 was before I painted it white... dont get me wrong I love that color... just with tracking my car I did not want a color as hard to match as iris blue.

Lagoon Green!

Thanks Jeremy D, turns out it's Lagoon Green! I was initially suspicious that that was correct, as it doesn't look green to me at all, but after checking under some carpets etc, I am convinced that it hasn't been resprayed bluer. I guess it must have been a relatively rare color, as I can only find two other guys (swbsam and paul franssen) on here that seem to have the same color.

Thanks for the info and the friendly welcome!

Welcome to the board!

That is a very nice Carrera. I really like the color. 87 is a superb year model (almost as good as 85 ).

That's a cool color. I've seen one other car like that at a Porsche event. Just the slightest tinge of green - more blue really.

She'd look better in GP White.

Nice ride John. Glad you could finally join the fray.

Looks like I might have a buyer for the '87. We'll see...

Not sure of the color, but good luck on the drilling. I had to do the same thing.

Hey Drago, thanks for the post, good to hear from you. You get to see the winner, and yes, GP White was my first choice, but especially with only 69k miles on this one, it was the winner. Good luck selling yours!

Hey Tim,

Any pointers you can offer up on the drilling out of the bolts? I'm a bit intimidated.

Thanks.

I used a 3/4 deep hole saw just go slow for fear of hitting the rim. I had a chisel ready but once I drilled a bit I got it to unthread.

Be careful removing the lug nuts if they are that tight. You can very well twist off the stud. If you don't have one already you might want to invest in a decent torque wrench.

Using a torque wrench takes the guess work out of whether they are too loose or tight.

OH and nice car. The color looks very nice.

Thanks for the warning Jerry. I do have a decent torque wrench, and fully appreciate the importance of using one. Especially on alloy (or carbon, or magnesium, or...). I worked as a professional bicycle mechanic both in a shop and for some professional racing programs for 15+ years.

I just wish I had the same knowledge and confidence on cars as I do on bicycles!

Thanks Bearded Viking! Since my original posts, it looks like it's you, me, Massa, Paul Franssen, and swbsam.

Any other Lagoon Greens out there?
