Engine stuck after 3 months
1971 911T 2.2
I dont know the history of the car, but I think it got a new crank/bottom end rebuild in 2003. There was a crank in a box in the car, rapped in some newspapers from 2003, one bearing surface damaged. The engine was really stuck. The starter could not turn the engine(new batteries) I tried to turn the nut in the end of the crank but nothing moved. Then I removed the sparkplugs, and put the car in 4th gear, and put some oil in the cylinders. I rocked the car back and forth and after a while the fan and crack started to move a little bit and then came free. Then I turned the starter with the plugs out for a short while. After reinstalling the plugs, after some cranking it finally started. After 10 sec. light/white smoke, not black blue. After warm up it ran fine (-5 degrees celcius outside) I think some of the reason it was difficult to start was the fact that it has been standing without use for a long time and that the hand throttle dos not seem to work. I hope there is not any damage after the engine was stuck and then was "forced" free? Is this a sign of anything? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The red oil warning light turns off when the engine starts, but there is no pressure on the oil preassure gauge, could this meen that the oil sender unit is bad? Is there one oil sender unit for the red light and one for the gauge? Is there a easy way to check if I have oil pressure if the gauge dos not work? Thanks for your help John

John,
You need to do a compression test to check the upper end. Hopefully the rings or pistons were not damaged. Also, did you change the oil before starting the engine? If not then it is a very good time to do so. Considering that the car has been sitting in a cold country, please take a light and look inside the fan intake. What you are looking for is a mouse next on top of the engine. Mice get inside the car and at times make a nest on top of the cylinder fins, and the engine burns up inside from no cooling air coming over the fins. About your oil warning light. Please check the wire going to the oil pressure gauge sending unit. If your red warning light is going out then you probably have pressure and the wire, gauge or sender is not working. Joe A (who had almost the exact same situtation on my 1972 911 in Germany years ago)

Hi Joe
Thank you for your informative reply! I have not done compression test, as I started the car just a couple of hour after I received it. I know the car run "fine" before it was stored. I can see from the exhaust that there is lightgrey/white smoke so I assume that there is not oil seeping into the cylinders. But I will of course follow your advice and to the "health check" compression test. I topped up the oil before I started it, just to see if it would start at all. I let it run for 5-10 minutes and my plan is now to do a complete oil change as you suggest. I will also check the wire to the sender unit. I might also check the sender unit by taking the one from my 73 911 if this is the same sender unit as on the 71 in question. Testing the gauge I am not sure how to do, maybe I will have to take the gauge out of my 73, but that I have never done and not sure what kind of work involved with doing so. Good tip to check if there is some rubbish behind the fan !! Thank you John

Joe gives great advice on checking for a mouse nest. I had to pull my fan/alt. before I found mine.

John,
Thanks for the reply and the other John brings up a valid point. Once you feel better about the engine run it until its warm then check the oil level. Get back with us when you can about the condition. Joe

I removed the oil pressure gauge from the 71 and took the gauge from my 73 and installed in the 71. THERE IS NORMAL OIL PRESSURE !!!!! I opened the gauge from the 71 and sprayed some WD40 inside, then reinstalled it, and it is working again. Everything seems to OK.
After changing the old fuel, it starts like a dream. Now I want to repair the hand throttle. Where is it attached to the engine fuel system? I have filled too much oil, its above max, so I will drain the one litre I topped it up with. Later I will change the oil completely.
