Idle speed stabilizer
 

With the recent chill, my 87 3.2 has begin stalling when I push in the clutch (as in coming to a stop sign). I am thinking that the idle speed stabilizer probably needs to be replaced, as it is original. Howerver, I was wondering if these tended to go bad electrically, or merely get gummed up with crud which I could clean with electrical parts cleaner or such.

Anybody have any experience??

The idle stabilizer may be the cause. I have not worked on one on Porsche, but have on other Euro cars with the same system. These are cleanable, but from my experience you are only buying yourself time. I believe, however, Warren or anyone??, that most of these cars with this system have a "Limp Home" feature that will stabilize the idle a few hundred RPM's above normal idle speed when this unit is disconnected. I think that this started with the Bosch Jetronic 2.2 system. Try unplugging it and see what happens. Plug it back in, maybe the connection is loose (this happened to me on my Saab). This unit functions to regulate the idle speed by pumping air around the throttle when it is closed. It regulates idle speed by varying the amount of air it pumps. If it does not pump at all or enough, the car will stall, esp at stop signs, etc where it would normally have to quickly compensate for a rapid drop to idle.

I took mine off and sprayed some carb cleaner in it, and it acted a lot worse for a few drives. It's totally random. I may start it, and have a steady 900 rpm from startup to shutdown. Or, it may die on my 3 or 4 times (when I push in the clutch as above) before it rights itself.
It's riveted together, so I don't think there's much that can be done in taking it apart...
