What would be the right thing to do/

I sold a part to a member of this board and was paid by check. I did not cash the check until the buyer had received the part and confirmed via phone that he was satisfied. I then lost the check.

I requested he send another check less any "stop payment fees". I know it's my fault for loosing the check in the first, but what's honest thing to do.

I been trying to get a replacement check for almost a year. I had all but forgotten it if I had not come across the "lost" check while doing my taxes. It just reminded me of one of the very few negative experiences I have had with members of this board.

Well first thing you should do is move the thread to OT.
If you haven't recieved a replacement check, less the stop payment fee, then you should cash the check you found. I would call the fellow and tell him you found it and will be cashing it. Money is a tricky thing.

Is a check still negotiable after it's a year old? I always thought you had something like 90 days to cash or deposit it and then it turned into a fiduciary pumpkin.

Any member of this board who wouldn't immediately send you a replacement check and say, "No stop-payment involved, we're all friends" is a jerk.

Yeah, I know, we're not all friends, but enough of us are that I'd take the chance.

In Canada a cheque is non-negotiable after 6 months.

Stephen's right. Porsches are our hobby....and we're supposed to be here to share our interest and help each other out.

If this guy isn't a good person to deal with then you should post his name as a warning to the rest of us. Sorry for your bad experience.

I know that it was my fault for missplacing the check and would have expected bank fees if they were incured.

Thanks for the feed back

Yes of course, but who among us would hold your feet to that fire? Maybe if they'd actually, literally been charged to us, but otherwise not.

You did the right thing by not cashing the check until the buyer was happy. Too bad you lost it. I think it is time for the buyer to send a new check, or you should be out with his name by the end of the week.

This sort of stuff kinda cranks me up, you try to do the right thing and get screwed because of it.

Cheers

All is Well

The fellow Pelican agreed to send me the money with out any deductions for stop payment fees. He said was an oversight on his part and apologized.

Thank you for the feed-back. "What goes around comes around"

I think 6 mos in the US, too. However, and I could be wrong, checks might have to say 6 mos. to be absolutely void. Glad it all worked out.

glad it worked out.

I'm not sure if it's the same for personal checks but one of the banks I work with on a commercial account has checks that we cut where they never expire.
