Rear Valence and Exhaust Questions
I hate to upset the purists but I have been toying with the idea of a dual outlet muffler for my normally aspirated 87. Will a turbo valence bolt up and allow this? I would like to keep the original one, ie... not cut a hole in it, so I will be buying another one of some kind either way if I do this.
Part Due... any new thoughts/experience with muffler brands? I kinda have a pick but I'd like to hear from the board. ------------------ rj cilurso 87 911 targa |

As far as I know you can't buy a rear valance suited for a dual outlet muffler. So either you cut the one you have or you buy a new one and cut that (before painting it).
In my opinion you don't gain anything but looks with a dual outlet muffler. There're a number of brands to choose from. Most are good. |

That's the kind of info I'm looking for. I realize there is no performance gain with dual outlets. I come from a musclecar background and cars look funny to me with only one exhaust. I know, I know... I'm just not in-porsche-inated yet but I'm getting there. I keep closing my eyes and chanting, "6 cylinders are good, 6 cylinders are good". Actually I love this car and am having lots of fun. I put off my 62 Vette project to play with the 911... and now it may never get done! I've become a Porsche guy against my will. At least nobody can say I bought it for the status. I wasn't a fan until I drove one.

A friend of mine had a midnight blue Carrera 3.0 with a 100 mm (about 4 inches) single outlet muffler. That is the ultimate look in my opinion.
I guess I'm not neutral since I wanted a Porsche since the age of 8. I'm curious to know what brand muffler you are contemplating to buy? |

Now I have not done enough research but if I had to buy today I would probably go with Fabspeed. I know somebody had some trouble with Joe recently but after hearing his side of the story I think he is pretty much up and up.

RJ,
Have you ever visited the Autofarm guys? I bet they have got a fiberglass valence, either precut, or easily modified, that would ease your consience ... and they probably have a few muffler choices we don't have on this side of the pond, too! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I will look into them again. Just an idea I have been toying with. Maybe I'll just get a 930

RC - there are all kinds of aftermarket dual outlet valances, and just as many dual outlet mufflers. Just decide what type of sound and look you want and go for it!
I came from the same camp as you - hotrods and small block chevys. Porsches (930s) were exotic looking dream cars. I put a car cover over my V8 Monza the day I bought my first 911. The cover is still on the car. The 911 sickness has taken all the "fun" money and all my time. I really miss hitting second gear and lighting up the tires at 60 mph! Six is good, six is good............. |

Rarely, yeah I miss my 383 with the big duration cam. I could set off car alarms at idle. Mmm, 575 horse was fun, but my 205 horse 911 pins the fun meter.
Warren, I am planning a road trip up to Autofarm just to shoot the breeze and see if they will let me look at some of the cars. I'll ask if they have a valence and muffler ideas. |

As for dual exhaust free-flow mufflers, they do add a few horsepower, but nothing spectacular unless you get a header system to go with that new muffler. The ones I have seen that are built the best are the ones by Monty, Mille Miglia, and GHL. I like the Monty mufflers best because they come with polished pipes, but no fancy rolled lip tips, just the raw ends. 911's look damn sweet with those dual 4" pipes sticking out the back!

Dear rcilurso
Have you looked into the cost and implications of bringing a car back to the US, as this interests me at the moment as the prices are very tempting. Are there any problems with emissions etc. or is it just a matter of changing the headlamps?. Any idea of import costs? rgds 86ragtop |

It depends on the year of the car. If it is pre-76 or so... not sure on the year I can look it up if ya like, it's no problem. You can get a waiver for just about everything. On a newer car it is not cost effective to import unless you find something real special like an RS. I was looking into an 80 and here is what I found. You need to have a roll-over valve put in the gas tank, coutesy buzzers, new glass, lights, door supports and a few more thousand dollars of little junk. I thought I could do it myself and save some cash but when I called they said they hold it until it is shipped to someone to bring it up to specs. I know you can get away with it if you register it as a race only car but frankly it became too much of a headache and I stopped looking at ways to get one in and started looking for an American spec car here. If you can find one, they are cheap. $15k for my 87 Targa. Nobody wants an american car when they can have the Euros.

I don't like the rolled lip tips either. The raw thin look is much better. Especially with 100 mm "durchmesser" ![]() Dansk Autopart also make that kind of mufflers/tips, but so far it seems they only come in 84 mm size or the stock Porsche size. |

rc, I have a complete B&B header setup with dual 4 inch outlets. I can tell you that it was the best money I have spent on the joy factor. Everytime I get in it, I walk around the back and take a look!! SWEET ! And that is after 2 years!! You dont necessarily have to cut a hole,(only two sides to cut) just about a 5 inch piece right where the rear valance hits the rear fender ext. Looks like a factory job if you smooth out the edges.
