wHAT'S THAT FUNKY LOOKING THING IN MY TRUNK?

Recently I disconnected the hoses for the charcoal (evaporative cannister) lines at the fan shroud and airbox because they were old and brittle. Rather then replace I just capped off the intake areas. I see this weird looking apparatus in the trunk that looks like a little black oval/flat metal item (14" X 5" with a long hose coming off the front (clear plastic) not attached to anything and a hose off the back tough to trace. The unit is not mounted or secure. Is this part of the evaporative control system?
Anyone have a clue as to what this is, how to disconnect it and what the result might be when removed? Thanks.

That is a charcoal filter, and is part of the evaporative control system.

Warren...I know this was Porsche,s big move to keep the environment clean back then but would I be disrupting anything in the system if I were to yank this out and toss it? Do the lines run all the way back through the rocker panel? 0r would I get smoother performance and have a cleaner burning engine if I just replaced those brittle hoses in the engine compartment and did my bit for the Clean Air Act. Then again it would lighten the car!!

BR,

I wouldn't think removing the canister & filter would affect driveability, but I've never tried it! The other 'box' is under the left fender, behind the headlamp housing.
