Pilot bearing with fat flange
Has anyone else seen this. I ordered a new pilot bearing for an early 911 flywheel. When it arrived I pressed it in the flywheel and found it was not flush with the surface. I pressed it out and measured both the flywheel and the pilot bearing. The recess in the flywheel is 2.0mm. The old pilot bearing has a flange that is 1.8mm wide. The new pilot bearing has a flange that is 2.5mm wide and hence sticks up by about 0.5mm after being pressed in. I asked the supplier to send another one, and this one has a flange that is 2.1mm wide.
Has anyone else seen this? I assume that it is not OK to install the flywheel if the bearing protrudes beyond the surface of the flywheel at all. Right? I'm tempted to just grind a few tenths of a mm off the new pilot bearing and install it. Does anyone see a problem with this approach? Here's a photo of the old and new pilot bearings. ![]() |

Maybe a tranny/clutch area isn't a bad idea...little/thin feedback on clutch questions seems to be a trend. And due to the fast turn over in general tech they get burried quickly.
