Oil pressure gage.

When I turn on the switch the oil pressure gage will go to 5 bar and stay there after I start it. Is this a bad sending unit or a open wire from the sending unit to the gage or ?

it should go down after it is warmed up. Afterwarm up, if you are doing 3000 rpm, your gauge should read about the same, if not a little bit more.

It always stays at 5 warmed up or cold.

Which car does this happen to the 73 914S 2.1L or the 78 911SC? I know my 78 SC drops down to about 1 bar when idling warm.

Sounds to me like either the sender wire isn't connected or there is an open circuit in the sender. Since the gauge goes full scale with the key on, it's o.k.

Thanks to all. It is the 78 SC. I will try to get a sending unit and see if thats it.

One quick check before you buy a sender. With the key on (and the gauge pegged at 5 bar) go back in the engine compartment and touch the sender wire to a good ground. The gauge should now read zero. If it does, replace the sender. If it stays at 5 then find the open circuit between the gauge and sender.
