salvage title
What exactly is a salvage title, and why is it that cars that have been salvaged or sold as 'parts cars only' cannot be rebuilt and re-driven or re-registered? Newbie question, I know, but I've been wondering about it...
By the way, this is the only car I'd be able to afford to buy right now... ![]() ![]() ![]()

I was doing the same thing you are. A salvage title basically means sometime in the past an insurance company had deemed the damages to the car greater then the value.
I looked through prob 20 different salvage cars, and decided after all to borrow some more money and get a decent example. Fixing up is fun, but how many years do you want to wait? Unless you are doing all/most of the work yourself, you will prob spend more buying a project car then buying a decent running one outright. Just my oppinion Andrew |

I'm not trying to sound mean or anything, but if you can barely afford the car, how will you pay for the parts and labor required to get this car running? Do you have a garage, tools, etc... to do the work or do you know someone who will do the work for you. I ask this because I have almost done the same thing a few times and those questions have always stopped me. Just trying to help...

Oops, I jts reread your post and realize you are really asking about the "salvage title". Do a search here as there was just a good discussion about the salvage title and what it really means. If you want a "parts car", this could be a good deal, but then you have to have a way to get the thing to your place and have a garage to put it in. Where I live, you have to have a car on pavement or covered in a garage/carport, especially if it's not in running condition. Garage space can be hard to come by unless you know someone with a pole barn.

In the state I live in, a car that has been totaled by an insurance co. can be rebuilt and driven,it will have an R title.I bought a BMW motorcycle with an R title and had good luck with it.However the car in your post has no VIN so you couldn't get a title in my state without that.Your state may be different.

Based on my recent experience selling an early 911T targa, that car is worth about $500. or less.
Every car has a VIN. Maybe his is missing from the door post, but you can get the # from the trunk. Aside from the price and condition, my other issue with it is that if he does not know the VIN and has no other papers, then he is obviously the holder of a "car" with an unknown legality status. But this isn't a car. It's 4 wheels, some sheet metal, and a collection of misc parts. Anyone attempting to make this back into a driveable car is an idiot.

In Maryland you can resurect a car with a salvage title. You just need to make all the repairs and take it to the state police inspection station (which I believe is in Baltimore) and have them inspect it. Once they pass it, you're good to go.
I'm sure this varies from state to state. |

Got any relatives in New Hampshire? They don't even title cars built before 1985 or something rediculous like that.

I have a salvage 930. Each state\province is different. Some cars get written off easy. Here is a example from where I live, if a fire makes it through the firewall its deemed permanently unrepairable, otherwise it can be repaired, you need pics of the damage and receipts for the repair, then it needs a inspection. So in order to answer your question if it can be made road worthy again, you need to know why it was written off and where. Hope that helps. Start with your DMV and the insurance company that wrote it off, if there is no fire or serious structural damage most likely it can be recertified.

I believe the salvage questions was answered, right.
About this example of a wreck: I don't even recognize a car! When I rebuilt my SC many moons ago, I drove it into my garage and it would still cost approx. $20k after tranny, brakes, suspension, etc.) ! But this piece of art here is good for the playground! Good luck, Frank

this car WAS a parts car that's been already stripped. pretty much worthless. And I have already done the restor a wreck salvage thing was fun took a year and a half car looks awsome. But I will never be able to even get half of what I put into it back out again. So i'll plan on keeping it till it dies or I do which ever comes first.
