Clean Steel Fuel Lines
My 82 SC has steel fuel lines going to the injectors. At some point I'm going to take another shot at trying to hunt down my unsteady idle, and was wondering if/how to clean these guys. Should I just put in a fuel additive, or is it worth taking them off and soaking them in some tasty solution?
Thanks in advance! Babak |

They are such a large passage compared to the injectors, that clean fuel should be enough to keep them clean.

I think you might get more benefit from pulling the injectors and having them cleaned and/or replacing the lines to the injectors themselves. Also, don't overlook the value of a new fuel filter if you haven't changed it already.

Thanks for the advice folks - how would you clean the injectors then? Are they easy to remove/install?
Thanks! Babak |

I think Witchhunter Performance (www.witchhunter.com) is one of the popular places that folks on the board send injectors out to be cleaned. It's not terribly expensive. They clean, flow test and tell you if they need replacing. They're not hard to remove, they're just hard to get to.

CIS seem to have an uneven idle by the nature of the set up. That is to say that when the engine is at idle speed the fuel flow to the injectors is very low, so if your injector or distributor is dirty or just plain old and worn the spray pattern will be less than perfect. Fuel cleaner helps but rarely cues the problem. I run a tank of Redex often and this seems to help. Also richening up the mixture adjustment helps a lot at a sacrifice of fuel consumption and CO reading if you have to pass smog tests. If its set on the lean side it will definitely idle rough. I'd get the CO checked first. Cleaning the fuel lines probably won't help at all. Clean the outside if you like with some soapy steelo pads.
