I have us aluminum poles that attach to the 944 and prior to that, just setup posts I had lying around to set the strings on the other cars (time consuming). I also use an electronic level to set my camber (I tape on wheel contact blocks where appropriate to contact the wheel and not the bulging tire). Camber and toe settings are cake while lying on a creeper, but I have no way to check caster. I obviously enjoy doing it myself, YMMV.

That's great. How is the tube attached on the 951?

You can check caster. Check out the instruction manual for the Smart Camber tool.

http://www.smartracingproducts.com/pdfdocs/011073_smartcamber_manual.pdf

You have to turn your wheels 20 degs. one way and take the camber measurements. Turn them 20 degs. the other way and take the camber measurements again. Then do something addition or subtraction. Just adapt the method to use your electronic level.

Not sure where you are in So Cal, but I highly recommend Hergesheimers in Lake Forest (in the OC). They corner balanced and aligned my 911 for $350.

Check these threads if you want to try an alignment at home.

Sounds high in comparison to what I payed yesterday.

I corresponded with Ray Scruggs yesterday and he sent me this message, "Home Alignment for Porsche, all 3 versions, is now free on the web (with a donation link at the bottom of each page). You can download a copy and print it out too.

Put this in your browser address line if it doesn't link directly from your email:

Home Alignment of Porsche

Please email with any questions.

Cheers and take care,

Ray"

Some things are just better left to a machine and IMO this one of them. I went through leveling my garage buying a camber/caster/toe gauge. Got two hours into it, sold my tools later on and brought it down to a shop. I have all respect in the world for people who do a full alighment on an old porsche as it is time consuming to get right, even with a machine.

Agreed. I did the exact same thing. The money I sold all the tools for paid for the alignment and corner balance!!!
