Well, that didn't work

Guys,
So a few weeks ago I got some aero mirrors off of eBay from a 1996 993 (not a 964). I had read all the threads from everyone and thought I had the wiring all figured out. Then I decided to order the connector pieces from Porsche that join the wires from the door to the mirror (has 6 pins and attaches at the base of the mirror). Today, the dealer called and I picked up the parts.

Tonight I figure this will be a easy 10 min job per side. I take off the driver's mirror and realize my wires are all different. The 993 mirrors have white, red, brown, black, blue, and brown again wires off the harness. This is not what any of the previous threads mention for the mirrors (964's are different). So, does anyone know what wire goes where for a 88 Carrera? I have almost figured it out but the freaking driver's mirror keeps moving when I move the passenger side mirror. The car has one the driver's side blue/green stripe, green, green/white stripe, black, brown/white stripe, white, two brown. The passenger side has green/grey stripe, green/white stripe, blue/black stripe, blue/white stripe, green/white stripe, and brown. If anyone knows the magic combination I will be forever grateful. Thanks,

Daniel

sounds like you might have the connections to the switches in the door screwed up they are easy to get mixed up when you pull off the door panels. let me look though and I'll let you know

Ken,
Thanks, the connections on the mirror switch have not been changed. I just cannot find a post where the 993 mirrors were used instead of the 964 ones. I am also considering my mirror switch might be worn out. Thanks and let me know what you find out.

mine are the 993 mirrors. the connector inside is a long flat one instead of the round ones like in the flag mirrors correct?

Ken,
Don't worry about it, I have had those nights at the hospital too. I didn't feel like messing with it today anyway--it was too nice so I just drove it. Get back to me when you get a chance.

Daniel,
You have a real problem. The 993 mirrors use two motors, the '86 to '89 Carrera uses one motor and a selector solenoid. The '84 & '85 Carrera used two motors.
It might be possible to use a 993 mirror switch to control the 993 mirrors.
I'm not familiar with the possiblibilty of interchanging the switches.
The '88 mirror switch and separate selector switch aren't designed to control two motors.
Another possibilty would be to use a '84/'85 set of control switches. Both the rocker switch that selects the mirror and the joy stick switch.
Either option will require copies of the all the various schematics so as to understand the changes necessary to use the 993 mirrors.
I'd like to wave a magic wand and give you a quick solution. I'm sure there is one. Perhaps someone reading this has already done it.

OK I looked it up the wire harness colors are the same, in the 993 mirrors as the 88' flag type that I removed from my car. I'm sure they were 993 mirrors and not 964 mirrors since the part number on the box was a 993 number. mine do work just fine with the 88 switch and the rocker selector

They make converters that fit inside the mirrors so that you can use the 2 motor mirrors. I purchased a set from Brad at BW motorsports and they work great!

Guys,
The flag mirrors I took off the car had two motors and are very similar to the 993 mirrors (I believe in 86 or 87 Porsche changed to the two motor setup). I am very close with the wiring, both mirrors work as they should. The only problem is when you move the pass side left or right the driver's side very slowly moves with it (not up or down). When you move the driver's side the pass side doesn't move. I am going to live with it for now and later next week spend some more time trouble shooting the wires. I am going to try to borrow another mirror switch and see what happens at our next Pelican get together. I will let everyone know what happens.

Yes, I have the Bently and no I haven't messed with them anymore. I might try to borrow KC's switch if he will let me next time we get together. The mirrors work as they should just the driver's side moves with the pass side a little bit (barely makes the motor work)--hence I think it might be a switch problem. This really isn't a big deal if you adjust the pass side first and how often do you really adjust the mirrors anyway? I am going to be very busy this weekend and next week, so it will be a while before I can mess with them again.
