looking at buying a 1979 911sc & need advise

I stumbled across a decent 911sc. I wasnt really looking at buying anything but It seemed like a great deal. This would be my first porsche. It is very solid no rust issues. Runs and drives great & has the 3.0 with a 5 speed. The original paint is in rough shape. The interior is decent and needs a headliner. It definatly needs some TLC but only needs cosmetic work. He said he would take no less than 5k for it. What else should I look at on the car? Is 5k a good buy?

I would guess that yes it is. But it might not be.

If you are not familiar with Porsche's spend a few bucks and find a knowledgeable Porsche mechanic who can look it over for you.

Get a pre purchase inspection (PPI) before you do anything else. How many miles are on it? Where are you located, maybe some folks here can recommend shops for the PPI.

cheers,
Michael

It has just over 100,000 miles. I am in Ohio, but the car is in PA. Its about a 2hour drive from me. The owner is also out of state and has had it stored in PA for the past year or so. He just wants rid of it. Getting it inspected would be almost impossible for both of us with our schedule. I have my own shop and have always worked on my own cars. I planned to put some time and money into it. I was figuring worst case scenario 5k seemed like a good deal for a solid complete car.

My guess I'd that worst case scenario the engine would need overhaul. I think 5k would still be a good - great deal. Especially if you do the needed work yourself.

for $5k it is a no-brainer. Donor cars for race cars are fetching more than that and that is for a core chassis and engine. I just bought a '78 for $8k with only a structural inspection to make sure the chassis was straight, and there was a line behind me :-) Interior was crap and so was the paint.

5K seems great unless this guy knows something you dont

Rubber smile is damaged, partially missing
fog lights are gone
front valence looks bad

otherwise looks nice

how do you know its rust free? lift up all the capet inside and inside trunk, under battery. look carefully with a flashlight in every spot you can imagine

are all the original engine parts there?

chain tensioner upgrade and rubber clutch upgrade and airbox pop-up uprgrade been done?

if it is indeed a "solid and complete" car, i would buy it without hesitation. I bought mine without a PPI and proper test drive...though i dont recommend doing that

the last picture in your first post.... the front, left black bellow looks all smushed in like the front bumper impacted something hard? the one on the right side doesnt look so good either, and that, along with the rubber smile looking mangled (see last pic you posted above), the missing fog lights and what looks like damage in the middle of the bumper---- makes me wonder if something happend to the front end. could also be that someone took the bumper off and couldnt get it back on correctly

If the car has been in a major accident and there is structural damage I would steer clear. Have a thorough inspection done before doing anything. How is the alignment? Does it drive straight? It does look like something funny is going on in the front end.

Yes, I think so. Just be prepared, worst case, to part it out.

Guys, it's $5,000, not $50,000. Live a little.

I have not seen the car. He did send me pictures of the underbody and trunk area and there was no major rust, just some surface rust underneath. I planned to look at the car and take cash and my trailor if I buy it. Its a long drive so I want to do all the research I can before I go. He did mention that it had some aftermarket stuff on it and that the front struts need adjusted because he just put these wheels on and now the tires rub when you hit a bump. I assume he meant the camber adjustment?

I've seen rollers go for that.
Rollers. You know... no engine or trans.

For $5k, buy it.
If you don't like it, somebody else will easily buy it from you.

Do it,parts alone are worth that, if you work on cars already, you know if it has been cared for or not. Ya it needs a little TLC, but at 5K you are ahead already.
