Hard Starting.......help!!
Here is my problem on my '73, 2.4 CIS "T".
With the engine stone cold, when you pull up the throttle lever to the 2k - 3k position and turn the key, it will lightly start popping and will not start up immediately (a pop off valve is installed). When I just pull the throttle up to the 1k - 1.5k level it will start slowly and gradually build up revs with no popping. Kinda of reminds me of that flick, "Flight of the Phoenix" when the engine barely turns over with great anticipation (hell of an analogy). Once it settles in I can throttle up with the lever and drive away with execellent warm up. The start up proceudre may require more than 1 or 2 times at turning on the ignition. Cold start valve? Small crack in the air box? (I already siliconed one side where a slight crack was noticed). Before I rebuild the fuel management system I want a good handle on what needs to be replaced. Historically, what goes wrong first with the CIS when start up procedures are concerned? This CIS is sensitive alright. Any suggestions? Thanks BR |

That sure sounds like the cold start valve is not injecting any fuel. I'm not as familiar with the older CIS cars. Is there a thermotime switch on a '73 CIS? If so, there are numerous threads on how to test the thermotime switch and cold start injector. I'd start there. If it runs OK after it finally starts, then it sounds like the rest of the cold start process is working good.

Yup, it's got a therm-time switch. It does sure sound like a cold start circuit problem to me. Like he said, check the previous thread.
