I want to remove my AC
 

The car is undergoing some changes and deleting the Air conditioning is top on the list. I live in the mountains of Colorado, so even Summer is fine without AC...

How much trouble is it to remove the AC compressor? Looking at it scares me to death and I do not know where to begin. All the gas is out of the system... Also, once the cooler is removed from my engine cover, can't I put two 6" brushless fans up there to keep things cool down below?

Hope this would help. I just did it on my '87. Like you, I let the freon out. Then, have you car on JACK STANDS at 4 corners. I started from the engine bay. First, disconnected all the hoses from the compressor. Remove the mount if you want. Then the condenser on the engine lid. You have pull the hose from the left rear wheel well through the back of the engine bay. On the bottom of the car is pretty straight forward. Just follow the lines. Then the hose would come to the left front wheel well with a little round bottle there. There shoild be another condenser in the front of the car. Finally, it ends in the front trunk. Remove the carpet and there a cover there has to be opened to disconnect the end of the a/c hose. Have a pair of protective glasses on when you work under the car. Cause you will trigger a mud slides while removing the undercar line with years on accumulation. Good luck!

Good luck with your removal, I will be doing that soon as well.

When I lived in Maryland, my car would run pretty hot, so I removed the rear condensor. It ran noticeably cooler after that. My A/C didn't work at all anyway. I also removed the compressor belt - I figured that if the clutch seized, it wouldn't be good.

You should do a follow-up post on how much weight you removed.

Don't put those extra fans on. Not necessary. The engine blower flows a HUGE amount of air and those fans could not keep up and would probably just be a restriction.

I wouldn't worry about the aux. fans either. You will probably get cooler engine temps by just removing the condenser!
