Rear axle nut pin
Hi all, what to do if the rear axle nut is torqued up2spec (250Nm right) , but none of the holes in the nut line up with the hole in the 'part that the nut is bolted to'?
Can I just torque it up more, loosen it up or ?? Thanks Dennis

Dennis,
The traditional guideline was to tighten it until holes line up. You might want to file & debur the slots and holes to make cotter pin insertion easier.

I regard axle nut torque specs as a minimum. Not that I put 500 lb/ft of torque onto a 200 lb/ft nut, but the danger with backyard gearheads installing these nuts is not getting them too tight. It's not getting them tight enough.

The torque specs for those nuts, from what I've seen, is a very (surprisingly) wide range. Something like 220 to 280 lb/ft. So there is plenty of range to get the hole lined up and still be in spec.

Ok guys, thanks a lot. I will just torque it up some more. Mind you, this backyard gearhead invested in a serious Stahlwille torque wrench to get this job done properly.
Cheers Dennis
