Carrera axle upgrade - Need HELP

I have done some reading but know I am more confussed than before. Just want to doble chek before buying anything.

I would like to upgrade the axle of my car in order fot them to handle the increased power of the 3.6 engine.

From what I read, it seems that the Carrera axles are the way to go, but i am confussed about the 915 and g50 years for the Carrera.

Are these the axles i need for my tranny ('73 915)?

911-332-024-14-M60 - Complete Axle w/two CV Joints & Boots 911, 108mm (late-1985-89)

As i understand the only thing I would need are the transmission axle shaft in order for these axle to fit, right?

thanks in advance for your help.

Those axles should fit. At least in theory. I don't know if the rear wheel bearings are the same in your car as in the Carrera.

You should maybe check that the bigger axle shafts needed fits your transmission.

I have checked and it seems that my '73 transmission came originally with 108mm flanges (4 x 10mm bolts).

My questions are:
-are these transmission flanges compatible with the Carrera drive shafts/CV joints?
-are the Carrera axle stubs compatible with the hubs on my car ('76 911S)

Thanks

The answer to the first question is no. The CV joint on the '85 - '89 Carrera has 6 x M10 bolts.

The answer to the second question is maybe. According ot PET the rear wheel bearings have the same parts number on your car and the Carrera (999.053.020.01)

For the axles to work in the '73, you need to change to the transmission flanges like you said. The transmission flanges you will need are not just bolt size dependent (M8 vs M10) but are also flange spline dependent. Some flanges have axle splines that are "fine" and some are "coarse" I do not know which years are fine and which are coarse. I'm just alerting you to the fact that there are different spline counts and you therefore must make sure the replacement flanges you get do indeed have the right type of spline to match the receiving differential housing inside your transmission.

mmasse,

I suggest reading my post here:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/329444-constant-velocity-joints-1985-porsche-911-a.html

It won't answer all your questions but help you sort things out from a 915 perspective.

Peter Bull:

Better check that...my recollection is M8 ( not M10) bolts for the regular 85-89 Carrera...M10 for the Turbo-Look though.....

M8 for early '85 Carrera and M10 for late. Right, M10 for '85 Turbo and look alike. CV diameter early Carrera 100mm, late 108mm. Turbo and look-alike stayed same at 108mm.

Note there was a Tubro/look-alike bolt "length" change in 1985 also <maybe other things too>. Don't trust me, go to PET diagrams.

Actually I got it right first time when ordered parts for my early '85 <except undocumented gasket>. I expected to mix something up and have second order.

ok, here is my confussion again.

My understanding is that late Carrera drive shaft had 108mm CV joint with 6x 10mm bolts.

The flanges that I have and came originally in the '73 transmission are also 108mm but have 4x 10mm bolts and 2 holes for centering pins.

My question is: given that the flanges are the same diameter as the Carrera CV joints, can't I just drill and thread the two pin holes and convert my flanges to 6x10mm compatible with the Carrera CV joints?

I will post a pic of my flanges later when I get home.

The change from the 8mm to 10mm Carrera axles happened during '85. My '86 had a 6/10mm bolt flange.

These are flanges that I have on my '73.

The 4 bolts are 10mm. What I would like to know is if anybody has adapted this to fit Carrera axles?

Maybe someone can measure the distance between the bolts on the Carrera axle??

I was thinking about drilling the 2 tapped holes two transform my flanges in 6x10mm?

Total diameter of the flange is 108mm, so this should ok for the Carrera axles, right?
