I've got an 89 targa the only option it doesn't have is heated seats..is it possible to add seat heaters to the existing seats

I suspect you would need to source a seat heating element, wiring, switch etc and then have your seat bottom repadded and recovered.

Might want to consider just swapping your seats for a pair with OEM heaters. The on/off/temp switch is built in to the seat and all you'd have to do is run power to them per the factory wiring diagram. My Targa has this option and they're great for top-off driving on cool days.

I've done it before, so it's possible to add them but probably cheaper to swap them for seats with heaters, as has been suggested.

A couple of years ago, there was a segment on Motorweek about retrofitting heated seats, just the upper and lower heating elements. I looked the kit up via computer......it was quite comprehensive and included wiring, relays, heavy-duty switches, etc. The most difficult part was pulling the seat-skins off and getting them back properly. Sorry, but I can't recall the name of the company. The price for the pair was extremely reasonable. I didn't want it for the Porsche, but considered it for my wife's car because she always complained......ended up getting her a new car that had heated seats. As a very long-time Saab driver, I can tell you the thing that destroys heated seats is not any electrical malfunction, but rather leaning into the car and placing your knee on the seat, thereby causing a break in the wiring grid.

I've seen battery-powered stadium seat heaters before, kind of like the heated socks and underwear you can buy at outdoor outfitters. Might be a cheaper retrofit...

ebay has them. I changed the heaters on my Volvo seat. A bit of a pin to un-skin the seats, but not very hard. Use zip-ties instead of hog-rings when you put the cover back on.

try www.seatheaters.com look like good prices. The problem with wiring them up directly is there are relays and stuff that need to be added if you safely want to heat your seats. Rather than buying different seats etc. this seem to be much cheaper and you get everything you need.

You list the Bay Area as one of your locations. These guys near Novato - http://www.autointerior.net/ do a great job and appear to have done lots of add-on seat heaters.

Would be a lot easier and safer than DIY.

737lindgren, you need to contact Mark 74 Carrera (on this board) to tell you about his heated seats. He recently went through installing seat heaters in his stock 911 seats and is super happy with the results.
