Tensioner removal tips
Ok tonight I'm going to have a look at removing my tensioners, idler arms and cam gears providing that I can fabricate a good flywheel lock.
I've read through my manuals and can't seem to find a good description of how to remove the hydraulic tensioners. There is one nut that holds them on that I can see but it just dosen't seem right to "pry" on them until they come out off of the idler arm. How is this supposed to be done? Thanks! ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa [This message has been edited by Leland Pate (edited 12-07-2000).] |

Providing the tension of the piston end bearing on the idler arm is relaxed, it should slide off rather easily. Don't let the nut and washer fall. They'll end up in the crankcase. In fact, stuff a clean rag in that opening at the bottom of the chain housing just in case.

Ok, so how do I get the chain tension off of the tensioners?
Keep in mind that these are the hydraulic tensioners not the mechanical ones. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks, ------------------ Leland Pate ___79 SC Targa |

Leland,
Since you are tearing the engine down all the way, there isn't any need for all of the precautions to preserve cam timing that it always assumed on a tensioner replacement job! Just get a big, 18" Craftsman screwdriver and pry until there is 0.1" or more clearance at the tip of the tensioner piston rod, pull out the body, having removed the 13 mm nut and washer beforehand. Good luck! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Tanks Warren,
I was really worried about damaging the tensioners by bascically "Springing" them (the piston rod) all the way out. Now I have the confidence to continue. I'll have to see if I can fabricate a flywheel lock out of something. |

At the Porsche dealer parts counter recently, a guy was sadly holding a carrera tensioner from which a little chack-valve BeeBee had fallen. Replacement BeeBees and (I think) a little ratainer are not available. He ordered a new tensioner.
He said it came out REALLY EASY. It sits at the top of the tensionerm like the piston only on the other side. Be careful. Otherwise, I'd agree that from here, you just unbolt parts. ------------------ '83 SC |
