California Porsche Owners

So to all you Californians...

I have a 82SC with the of course the 3.0L engine...

although I am looking FAR FAR into the future ($$)...what is the best way to get power out of this car...

I would like to keep it as stock as possible (ruling out the 3.6L conversion by Mr. Olsen, so keeping the case) but I am willing to go so far as cyl...pistons...SSI...but then there is emissions...I am willing to listen to legal and not so legal suggestions

So what are your suggestions...I want a daily driver that can perform on the track as well...

Also if I plan to run my car...I guess mods will take me out of certain catagories...or give me points for far out mods...so want to keep that to a minimum

Steve from Johnson's alignment has an SC and said to get a 3.2L crank and euro fuel injection...any ideas...

thanks

I'm not an expert and can't give specifics on upgrades for SCs, but here are some things that I think might help.

New Pistons and Cylinders, for both a larger displacement and maybe a little higher compression. Then SSI, cams, port the heads, slap on some webers. I think that should give you some good horsepower with a lot better throttle response. I'm not sure about the legality of webers, but generally with exhausts the car can be tuned to pass the sniffer smog test, but you have to take it somewhere where they will pass it on the visual.

I can't wait till my 930 gets back from the shop: K27-7200, GHL headers, muffler, and an HKS boost controller.

I have the same engine in the same state. This is what I am considering. SSI's/headers, 964 cams, 9.8:1 pistons, maybe some head work. I don't think that you can do much more with CIS. I personally would not go the Webers route. I just downloaded the TWM Induction catalog and their stuff looks awesome, but very expensive.

Regarding emissions, there are two choices. Find a place that will not be picky about the visual inspection or, fabricate a custom exhaust including cats. I believe that this can be done at a reasonable cost. I would find a catalytic converter from a car that also uses CIS (actually two) then run short lengths of pipe that turn 90 degrees from the SSI's to the cats (which would run laterally in the space occupied by the muffler) and then to some small mufflers. This would require modifying the rear valence for dual exhausts. Assuming you got the cats used and found a non-Porsche shop (like a hot-rod shop) to do the pipes, it shouldn't cost a whole lot more than some sport mufflers.

I too am a California owner. Come January 2003 ( that's when the 25 year old car rule goes into effect) my cat, and smog pump are coming off, and new SSI's, bursch muff, and webbers are going on.

"Mr. Olsen?"

My dad drives a Mercedes with the original 4.5 liter engine in it. Feel free to call me Jack, youngster. This is California, after all.

I heard it was likely going to be changed, for the worse, but I could have heard that from a crazy person.

It's one of the reasons I bought a 73.

Actually there is not 27, 30 or even 50 year rule. The legislature just specified 74 as the cut off date for smog checks. However, even pre-74 cars will be subject to the drive-by sniffers which will pick out gross poluters driving on the street. The State will them send aletter telling the person to bring the car to non-gross poluter status before driving on the road. Check out the California DMV web site. That doen't mean you can't take the stuff off though. Of course, i am referring to off road use only.

(Where's the spell check on this board. I swear english is my first, and only, language. From hereinafter, all spelling errors are to be considered typos. Thanks.

This is taken directly off of the California Bureau of Automotive Repairs website...located at http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/smogweb/

Not all vehicles in California are required to get Smog Check inspections. Whether or not a vehicle needs a Smog Check depends on its type and model year. In addition, how often a vehicle has to get a Smog Check depends on the area of the state in which it is registered.
Some Vehicles Are Completely Exempt

At this time, all 1973* and older vehicles are exempt from the Smog Check Program, but owners of these vehicles are required by law to keep their emissions systems intact. In 2003, a 30-year rolling << exemption>> will begin.

So 25, 27 year rolling exemption is incorrect....

Mike, I've heard that the 30 year rolling exemption is in some jeopardy of not actually happening. Have you heard that, or does it look like its set to start up in 2004?

FYI, the California legislature is addressing an exemption for cars not driven over 5-6K miles.

AB 567 Exempts vehicles driven 6,000 miles or less annually from the biennial Smog Check inspection. Requires the waiver be issued by a referee at a test-only station.

SB296 also provides hope. It exempts vehicles driven 5,000 miles or less annually from the Smog Check Program. Requires the waiver be issued by a referee at a test-only station and cost no more than $5.

I've heard thru the grapevine that AB 567 does not have a whole lot of chance of passing....I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

As to the bill that started it all it is AB 2795 enacted in 1998. The link below gives you the actual bill... http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=ab_2795&sess=9798&house=B

There have been a few bills proposed that want to stop the rolling exemption, but fortunatley they have all been defeated.

hmmm...budget...good question

I hope to do most of the work myself...
my uses are daily driver, with some track time.

I am probably looking for about 5K
for parts...but this includes a transmission rebuild and engine overhaul...some might be laughing, but 5K is not my true budget...I plan to drag this over many years...so I will continue to add...but 5K to get me started.

I guess I have heard most of the classic examples...SSI, Carbs, pistons & cyl 3.2L...which cams are best...

Also this 3.2L crank with euro injection...what is all that about...does that increase the compression ratio...how much more power?

And the california issue is to see if anyone has done the SSI upgrade...muffler too...and gotten away with it in CA...

not too hot on the carbs...they sound great and look cool, and improve response but...too finicky...

oh and what clutch upgrades have you guys done...mine is coming to the end of its life...

new pressure plate?...flywheel...sachs?

thanks

Well, you can wake the 3.0 real nice with 964 cams and SSI exhaust with dual outlet muffler. The CIS will handle that with the temporary removal of the smog pump.

Some shops will miss a cat pipe but not a smog pump. Throw it on during testing and all should be fine....I would pretest prior to putting the car on the pipe and hooked up to the computer....

Only way to get more HP and be smog legal is to transplant a complete 3.2 or 3.6 motor in your shell. You will have to smog to the year of the motor though. That should not be too tough, but you will need a cat pipe....
