Tour de Mulholland

Given the recent thread recounting infinite tales and tails (not to mention some tail ), I thought it might be an idea to take the tour. Of course, we will need some, or a few of the originals to show the way, describing the lay of the land as we go.

What I suggest is a prerun noting current landmarks and mile markers and a comprehensive map which I would be happy to donate my time to developing with needed guidance. Then, when the "tour maps" are available, to schedule a run and maybe a 2nd for those that can't make the first chosen date.

Furthermore, we could even have a real time narration if everyone brought radios. I've seen these low powered gizmos for little money and we have time to find them on the bay, or whatever. Of course (again) we need someone willing to do that.

I'm suggesting a slow speed run (really)in the fashion of a rally with plenty of stopping points if convenient. Maybe all of this perhaps to be followed by some more exercise on the other side, ala the New Year's Day run. I don't think anyone will enjoy the "tour" blowing by Grandstands in a flash. In fact, we could do this after a run up Stunt (just a thought).

I think encouraging a passenger in each car would be noteworthy in that each driver has a navigator in the spirit of a rally. We have a big weekend coming up 3/9 thru the 11th and I think there will be several out-of-towners in the area who would enjoy the ride along. But, the only practical time on that particular weekend is Sat afternoon. Maybe that's not the best time for a look-see.

Let me toss the ball out here.

Great idea!

If you can wait until after March 1--which seems likely--I can arrange to film it in high quality 24p DV, possibly with multiple setups, both hand held and mounted. And then I can edit the thing together and we can produce a simple, limited edition DVD of a professional caliber for those who want to buy in.

Thoughts?

That sounds great, too bad I will be in Seattle! Damn. I will be looking for the map so I can do the second run.

Well, if anyone is really into doing Mulholland runs, Radu (gostraight) and I start in Studio City and go down to the end where it turns into dirt just about every Sunday afternoon.

Traffic gets a little annoying, but it's good times. Anyone else interested?

Also, the daytime manager at the Fox and Hounds (Ventura and Vineland) is interested in being a finishing point for Pelicans and others on Sundays. Line up the P-cars out on Ventura, have some eats, maybe watch Porsche Cup, and make a scene of ourselves.

That would be fun to see.
Get pics of what landmarks and corners were then and have "this is now pics" side by side. so the impact of houses and traffic can be better reflected.

Milt:

That sounds terrific. I would love to participate in what you proposed.

I just returned from Decker/Canyon Mulholland not 5 minutes ago in the wife's BMW X3 3.0.

It has suddenly become urgent to get my 911's no start problem solved.

Sounds like fun. Can someone tell me where it ends? I'm going to hit it tonight on the way to SD off of the 405. Probably not a wise idea at night, but I can't resist after reading all the hype.

Go one way (off the 405), and it ends in Malibu, at the Pacific Ocean. Go the other way, and it ends in the Caheunga Pass (by the Hollywood Bowl/Universal Studios). However, it's also not entirely contiguous over by the Topanga Canyon area, IIRC.

Speedo 959,
From the 405 towards Malibu, you'll only go a couple miles before the road stops.
It is easy to continue that way though. Go back down to the valley on Havenhurst, West on Ventura, back up on Topenga Canyon, then west on Mulholland all the way to Leo Carrillo beach on PCH.

All the racing history is between the 405 and the 101 though.

So, where is it that you go to where the "road turns to dirt?"

It's about 1/2 mile or so past Havenhurst. It actually sort of splits in two. Go left and it's a dirt road that's motor vehicle restricted. That's Mulholland. Go right and you end up on some residental street. The easier access down to Vetura Blvd. is Havenhurst though.

Usually when we go out, we turn around at the dirt/residential fork and come back to Studio City.

QUICK EDIT: Calneva Dr. is the road you go back to Ventura. Calneva becomes Havenhurst. Havenhurst takes you to Ventura Blvd.

make sense?

Thumbs up

Sounds like a great idea Milt!

I'm not sure I could particpate that particular weekend with all the Porsche goings on and VARA at California Speedway. I may need a clone to attend everything as it is.

I did see that on google maps using the hybrid. You can clearly see the color of the asphalt and then the light tan gravel/dirt road. To bad, the road really gets interesting from that point going west. Now that would be a real rally!

That's the dirt section that Dave talks about in the "King of the Mountain" thread. It used to be open I believe to cars. If you look closely, you can see the old Nike missle base up there just off Mulholland. I think it was the radar station.

And, there are no houses up that way. Nobody to bother like Chuck Conners.

Well back to the other side of the 405. I'll come up for prerun whenever anyone wants to point out the highlights. I can bring a camcorder to try to register the milemarkers, etc. as we recon the road.

Well, like I said...

Radu and I make runs from Ventura/Vinland in Studio City, up to Mulholland, down to the dirt and back on Sundays usually. Of course, we don't really... uh hmmm... slow down that much.

Milt, the dirt section is my backyard. It used to be quiet and drivable, but not fast. Now it is open to hikers and mountain bikers and gets busy on the weekends.

Copy and paste that into Google Earth or Google Maps and you'll see where Mulholland turns into a dirt road for a few miles.
