RS Door panel handle replacement. (Im Cheap!)

With the rain and all today (Yes it rains in SoCal) I decided to finally replace my RS door pulls. The original ones were plastic and did not last long. They broke pretty quickly. (the rest of the panels are of high quality) So today I set out to fix them. I found some new door handles that were with in my budget ( $9 ) and used some 10/32 flat head screws with extra large washers for the back of the panel for pull support. The new handles are slightly larger but the hinge parts are made of metal and will last alot longer then 2-3 door closings. So this cheap b@st@rd got out for less then $20 for new handles!

Nice but where did you find the handles? I've got DIY RS door panels on my list.

Jay, Picked them up from Moss Motors. They are local to me but you can find them on the web. They specialize in British cars. The part # is 472-240 and was $8.95 per handle. You can google Moss Motors. Good luck on the door panels and post pics wwhen your done.

Thanks for the info. Soon as I get the engine back in the car I might start on the doors

Dan,

I saw your earlier post on this subject and have got myself some of those handles.
My question however is regarding the leather pull strap just below, which looks very neatly secured
What did you use to fix it ??

Dan,
Follow up question for you...
I'm sure on your earlier post you had 'frankensteined' the old RS handle and just used the MGB ends.

I notice now that you are using the complete MGB item.
What happened to the Modified version you had before?

Chris - I have/did use the whole MG handle instead of putting the two togther. The metal hinge part is what seems to break on the Porsche OEM part supplied. Some guys will take the handle part from the 911 and use the hinge part from the MG to make their handle. I decided to use the MG part complete as the handle also is much stronger.
The strap part is attatched with a long screw with attached washer like upholstry shops use. Its long enough to reach the sheet metal of the door. You need to carefully drill a hole thru the panel into the door metal for the screw to thread into. Have had no problems with this part of the panel.
Hope that helps a little.
